Content producers' reel Trouble: Unsold scripts pile up as OTT, TV platforms tighten budgets

What’s up with OTT industry?

As TV broadcasters & OTTs tighten budgets, production houses grapple with low offtake and fall in rates for shows, films
Javed Farooqui & Rajesh N Naidu (THE ECONOMIC TIMES; May 16, 2025)

Mumbai: Content production houses are grappling with a growing backlog of unreleased films and streaming content, leaving them saddled with hundreds of crores of unsold inventory, industry executives told ET.

With television broadcasters and OTT platforms tightening budgets and going slow on content investments, the industry is finding itself at a crossroad. Executives said the ongoing consolidation in the media sector has compounded worries for content producers.

The industry is contending with the twin challenges of unsold inventory and falling acquisition prices for shows and films. Streaming rights for films have declined 30%, while satellite rights have corrected by 50–60%. The per-episode cost of some TV dramas has nearly halved while producers of big-budget reality shows are facing mounting pressure from broadcasters.

Several completed projects remain unreleased as platforms reassess spending, focusing instead on profitability and cost optimisation. Applause Entertainment, Jio Studios, and Zee Studios are among studios with unsold ready content.

"A lot of content studios went on a content production spree between 2021–23 buoyed by the spurt in demand for streaming post Covid. However, the industry was hit by a reality check as the industry was going through consolidation and the streaming giants were also re-evaluating their content strategy," said Bharat Ranga, MD, Beginnen Media. He however emphasized that the content industry “remains robust as consumption continues to remain solid”.

Industry estimates show 150–200 mid-budget films across languages are yet to find buyers among streamers or secure theatrical releases while 40–45 web series are awaiting streaming debuts. Some of the affected films include ‘Tehran’ (starring John Abraham), ‘Sarvagun Sampanna’ (featuring Vaani Kapoor), and ‘Kennedy’ (directed by Anurag Kashyap).

Aditya Birla Group-backed Applause, known for its aggressive content investments in recent years, had inventory of Rs 687 crore as of September 30, 2024. People said the company had Rs 150 crore of unsold content, which has since halved to Rs 75 crore.

“Our content investment consists of subsequent seasons, new series and movies in production and development, ambitious projects like Gandhi, and some ready shows and direct-to-platform movies. Yes, like many others, we also have a small amount of unsold inventory. However, a large part of the inventory on the books is work-in-progress (WIP) content," said Prasoon Garg, chief business officer, Applause Entertainment.

In April 2023, Reliance Industries-owned Jio Studios unveiled a slate of over 100 movies and web shows across languages and genres, with plans to release them over 18–24 months at a total investment of Rs 2,000 crore. While a major portion of that slate has been released, some titles are still awaiting buyers.

Even the reality TV space is not immune to cost rationalization. JioStar is in active talks with Banijay Asia-owned Endemol India to cut production costs of marquee shows like Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss Hindi, amid weak TV ad monetization, said industry insiders.

Despite the headwinds, production houses are betting on long-term value creation. Applause, for instance, remains committed to retaining IP rights, hoping a future demand surge will unlock the value of its content library.

Analysts estimate that about 300 Hindi films are released annually. However, given the selective appetite of major streamers, only 30–40 Hindi films—typically big-budget projects with major stars—are being acquired for streaming. This leaves nearly 250 Hindi films with limited release options, forcing them to compete aggressively for buyers, which now also include aggregators and independent distributors. Mid-budget films, often lacking star power, are especially vulnerable. Experts say content buyers are more genre-specific when considering mid-budget titles.

"We have to understand the situation from two perspectives—one is streamers, and the other is theatres. I think streamers are highly selective in buying mid-budget films largely because there is low discovery for such films on their platforms. As regards theatres, the focus is clearly on big-budget or spectacle or mass films which can provide high footfalls," said Sharad Mittal, founder of Kathputlee Arts & Films, a Mumbai-based production house.

"A recourse for producers of mid-budget films is to look for aggregators who can bundle films based on a theme or genre and sell them off. These producers can also collaborate with independent film distributors who distribute mid-budget films in small yet notable territories in the overseas markets," he added.

You don’t have this much autonomy when directly dealing with streamers-Vikramaditya Motwane

Vikramaditya Motwane

Black Warrant creator Vikramaditya Motwane on how the series’ making can serve as a model to ensure filmmakers’ creative freedom when working with streamers
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; March 30, 2025)

For Vikramaditya Motwane, 2025 began with his show, Black Warrant, winning praise. What added to his joy is that the prison drama gave its leading man Zahan Kapoor his big break. The creator-director is impressed that the actor is keeping a low profile despite the series’ success.

“I love that. Everybody presumes things about him, and wonders where this guy had been. They forget that he has been working in theatre for the last 10 years. I feel he’ll be judicious about the [projects] he’ll pick because he has a firm head on his shoulders,” says Motwane.

The Netflix prison drama was praised for its storytelling as well as performances. But Motwane believes there is more to learn from Black Warrant. The creator hopes that it can serve as a model for the making of web series in India.

He breaks it down, saying, “Satyanshu [Singh, co-creator], I and our team invested in the development process. We wrote a bible and two episodes, and then took it to Applause Entertainment. That way, you’ve already set the show’s creative tone. After Applause came on board, we made it and then took it to OTTs. This model offers a lot of independence and a correct creative approach.”

Most creators struggle to achieve such autonomy while dealing with streamers. It has become a talking point in the film industry, with many filmmakers echoing how their creativity is stifled by OTT giants. Does Motwane believe he would’ve enjoyed similar freedom if a streamer had come on board at an earlier stage?

“You don’t have this much autonomy when directly dealing with streamers. I’m not against the idea of a collaboration, but it has to be correct. Things can’t be made by committees. You need to support creators. During the feedback process, rather than telling us we’re wrong, tell us the alternative [to a scene]. When executives are offered a lot of material, they tend to look at everything in an instinctive way. That becomes counter-productive because you are seeing everything in the same way.”

Motwane rues that the industry is going through a lull, where “a lot of pitching is happening”, but not enough is graduating to production. He, however, has his hands full with various projects. “I’m writing a sports biopic,” is all he is willing to share at the moment.

One thing I can say is you will see a new Kareena Kapoor in the film-Hansal Mehta

Hansal Mehta: With Kareena, it’s the same chemistry that I have with Rajkummar

Though they hail from different worlds of cinema, director Hansal Mehta on developing a bond with Kareena while working on the upcoming thriller
Priyanka Sharma (MID-DAY; July 10, 2023)

Is it a keen eye, or instinct? Or both? In his 23-year film career, Hansal Mehta has displayed a knack not only for compelling stories, but also for scouting talent. Be it Rajkummar Rao or Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (2020) find Pratik Gandhi, the director has brought gifted actors to the fore. His yet-untitled next unites him with Kareena Kapoor Khan, a superstar at the top of her game. Not habituated to collaborations with big stars, Mehta says he was taken by Khan’s command over her craft.

“It was an absolute joy to work with her. She is such a good actor,” he begins. The noir thriller, which sees Kapoor playing a cop, marks the confluence of two different cinematic sensibilities—while the actor’s filmography is dominated by mainstream masala offerings, the director leans towards raw and hard-hitting movies. So, what happens when the two worlds come together?

“One thing I can say is you will see a new Kareena in the film. We had a very good time shooting the film. With her, it’s the same kind of chemistry that I have with Rajkummar, Pratik, Mohd Zeeshan [Ayyub] and Karishma [Tanna],” he smiles.

Tanna and Ayyub star in Mehta’s Scoop, which dropped on Netflix last month and has  been widely praised since. Success is sweet, but freedom tastes better, agrees the director, who has bagged a multi-series deal with the streaming platform after the series’ success. “It gives me an added blanket of security. I know [now] that the stories I want to tell have a space, where they will be embraced wholeheartedly. I applied a lot of learnings from Scam 1992 on Scoop. [One of them is] that if you tell authentic Indian stories in an honest and engaging manner while trusting the audience’s intelligence, they can be told,” he says.

Casting television actor Tanna as the lead could have been a challenge, but the director says that the success of Scam 1992 put him in a position of power to defend his choice. “That’s the power of success. Because Scam succeeded, I could have these casting negotiations. It took an Applause [Entertainment] to believe in Pratik, for Netflix to believe in the casting choice of Karishma.”

(With our Mahatma Gandhi Series), we are designing a story akin to The Crown or The Tudors-Sameer Nair

Sameer Nair: It’s a human drama, not a political story

From pursuing historian Guha for book rights, to exploring the Mahatma’s bond with Jinnah, creator Nair discusses making a definitive biopic with his web series Gandhi
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 16, 2022)

In May, to mark five years of Applause Entertainment, creator Sameer Nair announced Gandhi, the magnum opus based on Mahatma Gandhi’s life. The multi-season series will be based on Indian historian-author Ramachandra Guha’s books, Gandhi Before India and Gandhi — The Years That Changed The World. It’s not surprising when Nair begins the chat by admitting that getting Guha on board was not easy. “I pursued Mr Guha for three years,” he smiles, before recounting,

“I first reached out to him in July 2019. I met him without reading the book in its entirety, and he sent me back. Then I read the whole book, and went back to him. I reached out to him again during the pandemic. [The conversation] went from a straight ‘No’ to ‘Let me see’, to ‘Let’s talk.’”

The series, with Pratik Gandhi of 'Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story' (2020) fame in the titular role, will see Hansal Mehta serve as director-showrunner, and Siddhartha Basu as historical and creative consultant. It’s easy to see that Gandhi is Nair’s passion project. The idea, he says, is to tell an all-encompassing story that sees the parallel growth of a nation and a leader.

“I don’t want to draw parallels because that has its own pitfalls, but we are designing a story akin to 'The Crown' or 'The Tudors'. There has been a single story made on Mahatma Gandhi [in terms of a biopic]. Richard Attenborough’s 'Gandhi' (1982) is a two-and-a-half hour movie about one man. Freedom fighters like B R Ambedkar and Subhas Chandra Bose don’t make memorable appearances in the film. We are attempting something more ambitious. We want to tell the story of Gandhi and the Indian independence struggle with all 150 characters since we have the advantage of time. In 25 hours, we will explore the whole gamut.”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s story begins as a tale of an angry young man, which will be the focus of the first season. It will go on to trace his learnings in South Africa that impacted his ideology. Nair elaborates, “When he went to South Africa, he realised the on-ground impact of racism. The journey plays out from there — how he comes back to India, gathers forces, and becomes Mahatma. The people he meets for 30 years before independence is what we are telling. People tell me they know the story, but do they really? They don’t know the million stories of the freedom movement. Gandhi’s friendship with Muhammad Ali Jinnah remains untapped. The story of the birth of a nation is at the heart of it. The politics of the story adheres to the book Guha has written. This is not a pro or against story. Mr Guha has questioned a lot through the book. For instance, he wrote that Gandhi went on to be the father of the nation, but could he be a father to his own children? It is a human drama, not a political story.”

A show of such magnitude relies as much on the principal cast as on its writing. “I knew the lead had to be Pratik Gandhi because he already does a play on him [Mohan No Masalo]. A range of new actors will be in the show; we want no one with baggage to come. This show is a multi-season commitment, so we need actors who will subscribe to it.”

The drama will go on floors next year.

Tanaav promises to be a thrilling watch; check out the exciting star cast

Applause Entertainment reimagines Fauda as Tanaav for a larger Indian and global audience; series to stream on Sony LIV
BOMBAY TIMES (June 14, 2022)

Applause Entertainment, the content studio of the Aditya Birla Group, is all set to reimagine and retell a story of conflict and struggle, with the Indian adaptation of the globally acclaimed Israeli drama series Fauda. Hailed as one of the best Israeli shows, the Indian version of the show, produced by the content studio in association with Applause Productions, is titled Tanaav (which means tension, chaos or stress). The series will be helmed by National Award-winning director Sudhir Mishra and co-directed by Sachin Mamta Krishn.

Set against the idyllic backdrop of Kashmir in the year 2017, the series tells the story of a Special Covert Ops Unit, their bravery and courage. Delving into the human drama behind the ideologies, dealing with complex emotions and flawed characters, all of whom share the same feelings of love, loss, betrayal and revenge, the series is a socio-political action drama with family at its core.

Shot extensively in real locations in Kashmir over 100 days, this fast-paced drama is told over 12 episodes. The cast is an eclectic ensemble of talented actors and performers cast by Mukesh Chhabra. The show features Manav Vij, Sumit Kaul, Rajat Kapoor, Shashank Arora, Arbaaz Khan, Zarina Wahab, Ekta Kaul, Waluscha Dsouza, Danish Hussain, Satyadeep Mishra, Sukhmani Sadana, Sahiba Bali, Amit Gaur, Arslan Goni, Rockey Raina, M K Raina, Sheen Dass and Aryaman Seth, amongst others, in prominent roles.

Created by Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz and distributed by yes Studios, Fauda has received praise internationally. While staying true to the original format, its Indian adaptation has been reimagined for a larger Indian and global audience.

Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment, said, “A global sensation, Fauda was always a story waiting to cross borders and be adapted in a new setting. We find it immensely gratifying to bring an edge-of-the-seat drama of this calibre to Indian audiences, offering a new perspective to the human stories depicting all sides of the conflict. With filmmakers like Sudhir Mishra and Sachin Krishn at the helm, backed by a stellar cast and talented writing, creative and production teams, we are excited to partner with Sony LIV to bring this show to the world. This partnership only strengthens our already strong relationship after successful collaborations on Scam 1992, Avrodh, Undekhi and Your Honor.”

Sudhir Mishra said, “Applause Entertainment discovers some of the best international stories to be reimagined and adapted for the Indian audience. As a filmmaker, Tanaav allowed me to explore a variety of characters and delve deep into their psyche. It is a true Indian story weaved into a tightly-knit action drama that highlights human emotions and the dilemmas they face. I cannot wait for the audience to binge-watch Tanaav, soon to launch on Sony LIV. ”

Pratik Gandhi to star in an epic series to be made on the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi

Pratik Gandhi to play Mahatma Gandhi in biographical web series

Applause Entertainment has acquired the rights to two books on Mahatma Gandhi, authored by historian Ramachandra Guha, for the series
BOMBAY TIMES (May 19, 2022)

Truth, love, non-violence and an iron-willed determination, the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi are timeless and have impacted generations of leaders all over the world. Bringing alive the period of Indian Independence, Applause Entertainment is all set to present a biopic on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Based on the writings of renowned historian and author Ramachandra Guha, a premium, multi-season series will be adapted from his two books — Gandhi Before India and Gandhi — The Years That Changed the World. The series will be produced for a worldwide audience and shot extensively across several Indian and international locations. Pratik Gandhi has been signed to essay the role of Mahatma Gandhi.

From his earliest days to his actions in South Africa to the struggle in India, the series will tell the lesser-known stories of Mahatma Gandhi’s life. It will also tell the stories of his compatriots and contemporaries, the incredible personalities who, along with him, played an integral part in the shaping of what became free and modern India.

Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment, says, “Ramachandra Guha is a historian and storyteller par excellence, and we are honoured to adapt his classic books — Gandhi Before India and Gandhi — The Years That Changed The World — to screen. We couldn’t think of anyone better than the incredibly talented Pratik Gandhi to bring alive the Mahatma and his philosophies of peace and love that shook the world. We believe that only a richly-layered, multi-season drama series will do real justice to Gandhi and to all the great personalities that embed the proud and illustrious history of India’s freedom struggle. This is a story of the birthing of modern India for a global audience.”

Ramachandra Guha says, “Gandhi’s work transformed the world and his legacy still sparks the most intense debates. His life was an epic journey that played out across three great countries — India, England and South Africa. Along the way, he made many friends and a few enemies too. I am delighted that my books on Gandhi are now being adapted for this ambitious and exciting series being produced by Applause Entertainment.”

Pratik Gandhi shares, “I deeply believe in the Gandhian philosophy and his values that echo simplicity in its purest forms. Personally, too, I strive to achieve and imbibe many of his qualities and teachings. Moreover, playing the role of Mahatma has been very close to my heart ever since my theatre days, and now, it is a huge honour to yet again essay the role of this legendary leader on screen. I believe it’s a huge responsibility to essay this role with dignity, grace and conviction.”

Criminal Justice makers team up with Amar Chitra Katha to adapt its stories into animated web series

Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; August 17, 2021)

Those who have grown up during the ’90s will tell you that they swore by stories of Amar Chitra Katha as much as they devoured The Famous Five and Nancy Drew. The indigenous comic book series had a way of simplifying Indian mythology and folk tales, thus familiarising children with stories rooted in Indian culture. Now, Applause Entertainment, the content studio behind acclaimed web series such as Criminal Justice and Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (2020), is set to offer a retelling of the popular titles of Amar Chitra Katha through an animated web series. The studio has acquired the license to the comic book series’ library of 400-plus titles, including those revolving around Lord Krishna, and Hanuman.

For Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment, the latest endeavour is a passion project through which he aims to “export Indian culture”. “I have grown up reading these iconic comics, and as a child, imagined them with dynamic visuals and dramatic action. This is our opportunity to realise that dream,” he says. The content creator hopes to take the deep-rooted cultural brand to screens across the globe.

While the project is in the initial stages, the makers hope to roll out the first animated series by next year. Preeti Vyas, president-CEO, Amar Chitra Katha, says it is imperative for the homegrown publishing giant to evolve with the times while staying true to their ethos. “Our mission has been to provide Indian children a route to their roots. We are confident that the team will do an amazing job adapting our stories, and providing the new generation with a crucial link to our past.”

Fatima Sana Shaikh bags Hindi remake of Tamil hit Aruvi

Fatima to lead Hindi remake of Tamil hit Aruvi about woman’s journey in male-dominated world
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 5, 2021)

After Karan Johar’s Ajeeb Daastaans, another big-ticket film has landed in Fatima Sana Shaikh’s kitty. The actor has been roped in to play the central character in the Hindi adaptation of the Tamil smash hit, Aruvi (2017). While the original featuring Aditi Balan was helmed by Arun Prabhu Purushothaman, the directorial baton has been handed to Eshwar Nivas aka E Niwas for the remake backed by Applause Entertainment and Viki Rajani’s Faith Films.

The Tamil film, widely praised on its release, reflected on the misogynistic ways of society through the journey of the protagonist who is disowned by her family and tries to build a life anew in Chennai. If the satire shone because of its script, it was also elevated by Balan’s brave performance as a woman whose rage against society finds an unlikely outlet on a reality show. Shaikh admits she is excited and nervous in equal measure as she gears up to shoulder the movie. “I am thrilled to do the Aruvi remake, and am looking forward to diving deep into the character. I am glad that [the two studios] have come together with E Nivas to make this content.”

The production team is zeroing in on the principal cast before the film goes on floors mid-2021. Producer Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment, says the movie is another attempt by the studio to bring strong feminine voices to the fore. “Equally funny and ferocious, Aruvi is a feminist social satire that stunned us when we first saw it. We were drawn in by its unconventional narrative, deftly balancing its black comedy leanings with the beats of a taut thriller,” he says.

Sudhir Mishra to develop Indian period drama set in 1840

Director to rope in international actors
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; February 25, 2021)

After offering a searing commentary on caste in Serious Men (2020), director Sudhir Mishra has found his next subject in the pages of history. The filmmaker is currently developing a period drama that traces the rise of the British Raj in India during the 19th century. “The story is based in 1840. It’s about time we tell our own stories. We owe it to the next generation so that they know the story [of our freedom]. The show takes a hard look at what the Brits did to us, and how they established [their rule] over the country.”

Mishra has envisioned the web series, backed by Applause Entertainment, as a three-season offering. “I have written the first season. Given the nature of the subject, the series has to be mounted on a massive scale, and it will take us time to roll the project,” he says.

Ask him if he plans to reunite with Serious Men actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui for the historical venture, and the director points out that the narrative will demand a fair share of international actors. “I would love to work with Nawaz again. If I have a role for him, I will go to him. It will be an international show and will include Western actors alongside Indian artistes.”

It wasn't a challenge in getting Call My Agent makers to agree to give us the rights-Deepak Segal

Soni Razdan, Rajat Kapoor, Aahana Kumra and Ayush Mehra
As desi adaptation of Call My Agent goes on floors, makers on how they convinced French studio to part with the rights
Uma Ramasubramanian (MID-DAY; November 3, 2020)

With the French comedy, Call My Agent, gaining worldwide popularity, it was heard that Karan Johar was keen to procure the adaptation rights to develop a similar series for Netflix India. However, in October, Applause Entertainment bagged the rights for the Indian adaptation that is being headlined by Rajat Kapoor, Soni Razdan, Aahana Kumra and Ayush Mehra.

The Shaad Ali-directed workplace comedy went on floors last week at Filmalaya Studios. Deepak Segal, head of content, Applause Entertainment, reveals that the team initiated discussions with TF1 Studio in France to set the ball rolling on the Indian remake. "[Generally] we [try to] understand why we are convinced that this story will work well for the Indian audience. This understanding, along with our expertise, helps us convince the format owners that they can trust us with the job. Once that is done, agreeing on the commercial terms is easier. When we approached TF1, the format owners, with our vision for the Indian adaptation, it wasn't much of a challenge in getting them to agree to give us the rights," says Segal.

The Indian version will be seen through the lens of four celebrity managers, who leave no stone unturned to ensure their star clients are at the top of their game in Bollywood. Each episode will feature an exaggerated version of a real-life celebrity. "The world of talent managers set in the film industry has not been explored here yet. Writers Hussain and Abbas Dalal have done a great job of writing the six episodes under Shaad's supervision." Besides working with a lean team and having mandatory thermal screening daily, Segal says the studio has appointed a COVID inspector to monitor the safety measures on the set.

A still from Call My Agent

Karan Johar's web show on back-burner as the makers refused to part with its adaptation rights?

Karan Johar
Sources say Karan Johar has put web show, inspired by Call My Agent, on hold after Applause Entertainment picks up remake rights of the French comedy
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; October 7, 2020)

In March, mid-day had reported that Karan Johar was reworking his Netflix production, which was inspired by Call My Agent, after the makers of the popular French series — Mother Production and Mon Voisin Productions — refused to part with its adaptation rights (KJo goes back to the drawing board, March 12). Now, Sameer Nair's Applause Entertainment has reportedly procured the remake rights of the comedy. The Indian adaptation will apparently be helmed by Shaad Ali while Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal will share the writing duties.

Owing to the latest development, it is heard that Johar, who was co-developing the series with Amritpal Singh Bindra, has put it on the back-burner. "The offering was reimagined in the past six months. What started off as a fictional show focusing on the workings of Matrix, one of Bollywood's biggest talent management companies, was rewritten as an industry story about warring production houses. However, with another studio developing the desi adaptation of Call My Agent, this outing is being put on hold unless the team finds a new hook point."

mid-day reached out to Bindra, who did not respond till press time.

Bipasha Basu to make her web debut with Indian adaptation of American series UnReal

Bipasha Basu
MID-DAY (October 26, 2019)

There's good news for Bipasha Basu's fans who have missed seeing her on-screen. While there has been chatter that she is toying with the idea of foraying into digital entertainment, looks like the actor has finally zeroed in on a project.

It has been heard that Basu will front the Indian adaptation of UnReal, the popular American television series that revolves around a reality television producer. Bankrolled by Applause Entertainment, the web series will be directed by Ken Ghosh.

A source close to the development reveals, "The original show, which ran for four seasons, explored how a young reality television producer is compelled by her superiors to generate salacious content in the bid for higher TRPs. The screenplay is currently being reworked to suit the sensibilities of the Indian audience. However, the essence of the original will be retained with the series showing the behind-the-scenes workings of a reality show and examining the cut-throat competition prevalent in the entertainment world. Besides Bipasha, the series will have a strong principal cast; the makers are currently in the last stage of the casting process." Basu is expected to start shooting early next year.
