It has been a long journey to the big screen for 'Apno Se Bewafai—No Rewind in Life', Irrfan Khan’s swansong. Prakash Bhalekar’s directorial venture was first slated to hit the marquee in 2020, but the pandemic played spoilsport.
After waiting it out for three years, the makers lined it up for a May 26 release, only to defer it again. As the Khan and Mahima Chaudhary-starrer opens in cinemas today, producer Piyush Shah says that it was pushed by a month to accommodate its dubbing in four languages.
“We are having an all-India release today, in over 400 screens. It’s a family entertainer, which we hope will reach out to many Irrfan fans. [His reach] was not confined to only Hindi cinema, people all over India loved him and his movies. By dubbing the film in different languages, we can reach out to a wider audience,” says the producer.
'Apno Se Bewafai' tells the story of Khan’s character, a married man who has an extra-marital affair and how it affects his family. Even though the drama has been dubbed in English, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu, the producer says the June 29 release is restricted to the Hindi version.
He adds, “As the distributors’ demands from other states come to us, we will start releasing the dubbed languages.”

Initially slated to hit screens in 2020, Khan’s long-delayed film Apno Se Bewafai to release this month, becoming his swansong

The Song Of Scorpions hit the theatres last week, reaffirming what we knew over the past three years — that Irrfan Khan’s demise in April 2020 left a void in Indian cinema that will never quite be filled. While the movie was being perceived as the late actor’s final big-screen release, it looks like we’ll witness his magic one more time. Apno Se Bewafai, which was stuck in the cans for the past four years, is being readied for a May 26 release.
In 2020, director Prakash Bhalekar had spoken to mid-day, stating that Apno Se Bewafai was lining up for an April 2 release (It’s a family entertainer with Irrfan, March 12, 2020). But the pandemic thwarted his plans.
Producer Piyush Shah says, “We completed the film in 2018 and got the censor certificate in 2019, but its theatrical release got stuck because of the pandemic. [After the situation improved], the audience had stopped coming to the theatres. So, we thought it wise not to release it at such a time. Today, almost 70 per cent of the audiences have shifted to OTT entertainment. But now, we plan to release the film on May 26.”
At a time when so many movies are taking the digital route, did the team not consider seeking an OTT première for the Khan and Mahima Chaudhry-starrer? The producer is keen on a big-screen release, after which he will choose a streaming partner for the project. “We are confident that audiences will come to watch our film. It’s a well-made family entertainer,” he adds.
The drama explores the theme of infidelity through Khan’s character, who pursues an extra-marital affair. Shah adds, “Mahima plays a rich woman to whom Irrfan gets attracted. After he goes astray, he regrets his actions, but one cannot undo the past. The film is about the impact of his actions on his life and family. Irrfan was such a wonderful man, so grounded and down-to-earth.”
Apno Se Bewafai has music composed by the late Bappi Lahiri.

Cashing in on Angrezi Medium hype, makers of Irrfan Khan's long-delayed film Apno Se Bewafai plan to bring it out of cans for April 2 release
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; March 12, 2020)
His ardent fans will agree that it been a long wait to see Irrfan on the big screen. As he returns to enthral the audience with Angrezi Medium tomorrow, it appears that the makers of another Irrfan-starrer are trying to make the most of the opportune time. The team of Apno Se Bewafai, which was lying in the cans over the past two years, has decided to release it on April 2.
Confirming the development, director Prakash Bhalekar says, "It is a family entertainer with Irrfan as the lead. He has done an excellent job in the movie. The supporting cast is made up of new actors."
Ask him why the film didn't see the light of day upon its completion in early 2018, and the director attributes it to financial constraints. "We completed the film before Irrfan's health deteriorated, but the release was pushed due to lack of funds." The actor, who was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, is currently on the road to recovery. The director claims he has been unable to inform Irrfan of the latest developments. "We are not in touch as Irrfan is not talking to anybody right now."
Irrfan remained unavailable for comment.
