Producer Raja Roy, brother of actress Reena Roy, has revived his long-delayed Hindi film Hum Mein Shahenshah Koun, starring Shatrughan Sinha, Rajinikanth, Hema Malini, Anita Raaj, Prem Chopra, the late Jagdeep and Amrish Puri. Shot in 1989, the film remained unreleased for 37 years and is now finally set for a theatrical release.

After principal photography was completed, Raja moved to London, leaving the project unfinished. Although there were attempts to revive the film over the years, a series of personal setbacks, including the untimely loss of his son and later the death of director Harmesh Malhotra, pushed it further into limbo. Eventually, Raja returned to India with the resolve to complete the project.

Reflecting on the film’s long and difficult journey, Raja said, “We never lost hope for this film. Many tragic events have unfolded over the decades, both personally and professionally. Today, I feel grateful that we are finally able to release it in cinemas. This film has endured grief, setbacks, and silence, yet it has survived. This is not just a movie for me; it is my child.”

Speaking about the technical upgrade, Raja explained, “It is an action film driven by Vendetta. We have used the latest technology to enhance the viewing experience. AI tools were employed for visual smoothing, audio mastering, and to bridge gaps in certain scenes, ensuring continuity without compromising the original performances or narrative structure. I have embraced new-generation techniques while retaining the soul of the film. The final result is now in the audience’s hands.”

Shabana and Aslam Mirza, associate producers of the film, played a key role in restoring and completing the project using modern technology.

Aslam said, “For nearly five years, I have been working to revive this film. Many people advised me to release it with minimal corrections, but I felt that would be unfair to the film, especially considering Raja Roy ji’s passion and the years of waiting behind this project. The film deserved to be completed properly and presented in a digitally refreshed, modern format on the big screen. We have also added a new song with a contemporary feel to complement the film.”

Addressing the legal clearances required for the revival, Raja shares that the necessary permissions were secured decades ago. He said, “We obtained NOCs from all the actors back in the 90s.”

Speaking about the cast’s response to the film finally seeing the light of day, Raja shared, “I share a very warm relationship with Shatrughan Sinha ji. When I informed him about the release, he congratulated the entire team and expressed his willingness to actively participate in the promotions. I am in discussions with Rajinikanth ji and will be meeting him soon to talk about promoting the film in the South.”

When we reached out to Hema Malini, she chose not to speak about the film but wished the team the very best.

With OTT giving him a new lease of life, Shakti Kapoor on getting positive roles after playing the loud villain in films
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; June 12, 2022)

He is often monikered as Crime Master Gogo or Balma, but the real Shakti Kapoor is far removed from the loud villainous characters he has essayed over the last four decades. However, the tide is changing in his favour as he is now being offered character-oriented and positive roles. The actor credits this new lease of life to the OTT boom. “Directors are offering me completely different characters today,” says the actor who was last seen in Parchhayee: Ghost Stories by Ruskin Bond, Bravehearts—The Untold Stories of Heroes, and Netflix’s Guilty Minds.

Changing his image in the minds of the audience, who assumed that Kapoor was like the roles he played on screen, was not an easy journey. “Earlier, I had the controversial image attached to me. I wasn’t happy with it, but kept quiet and let my work do the talking. One day, my children—Siddhant and Shraddha—told me that I should stop doing bad films just for the money. They believed it was better that I sat at home and watched movies instead. [Now, I get to] play a father, husband, and family-oriented roles, that’s the real me,” reflects the FTII Pune graduate, who accepts that the antagonist roles he portrayed on screen were his “bread and butter”.

“Though I was appreciated for my role in Shyam Benegal’s Zubeidaa [2001], I didn’t get similar offers after that.”

Up next, Kapoor has Aleya Sen’s Trial Period. “It’s a beautiful, positive, and quirky character which will make you laugh and cry,” says the actor, and adds, “I also have a Hollywood series shooting for which begins in August. Post that, I am doing a thriller with Bejoy Nambiar.”

Kapoor has completed the shooting of Pahlaj Nihalani’s Anari Is Back also, featuring Mithun Chakraborty and Anita Raaj.

Cops arrive at '80s star Anita Raaj's Bandra home following complaints of her entertaining guests amid lockdown; actor squabbles with the security guard for spreading the word about visitors
Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; April 23, 2020)

Neighbours of yesteryear actor Anita Raaj and her husband Sunil Hingorani have alleged that the couple had been entertaining guests at their Pali Hill home on Monday despite the Coronavirus lockdown. High drama ensued at the posh Bandra address when cops landed at the actor's doorstep following the neighbours' complaint.

A source says, "Ever since the lockdown was announced, the society has barred entry for outsiders. So, the neighbours were surprised at the steady stream of visitors at her flat and expressed concern about the threat it posed to their health. On Monday, when it was noticed that they were entertaining guests, the local cops were informed."

The situation apparently took a turn for the worse after the cops left the premises. In a video that is in possession of mid-day, it can be seen that Raaj and her husband had a heated argument with the security guard in the lobby. "They wanted to know who had complained about them to the cops. At one point, they asked the guard if he had informed the neighbours about the visitors," adds the source.

When mid-day reached out to Raaj, she offered a different version of events. "Since my husband is a doctor, one of his friends had come home for a medical emergency. His wife came with him for assistance. My husband couldn't refuse him on humanitarian grounds. After checking the situation, the cops apologized for the false complaint that was lodged with them and left immediately."

The actor, best remembered for films like Prem Geet (1981) and Naukar Biwi Ka (1983), and currently seen on television in Chhoti Sardaarni, asserted that she would not compromise the safety of others. "I won't behave irrationally by hosting a party in the current scenario."
