Vijay Sethupathi's son Surya set to make debut with Phoenix

Vijay Sethupathi's son Surya set to make debut with Phoenix: 'It felt like the right place to begin'

Playing an MMA fighter in his debut film Phoenix, Surya Sethupathi hopes to earn the audience’s respect and carry superstar father Vijay’s legacy forward

Surya Sethupathi is no stranger to cinema, having worked as a child actor in the past. Now, ready to begin his new chapter as a lead actor, the debutant — son of superstar Vijay Sethupathi — believes he couldn’t have asked for a better launch vehicle than Phoenix, directed by Anal Arasu.

“I’ve always been around cinema just by being with Appa and observing him. When Phoenix came to me, it felt like the right place to begin, not because it was designed as a launch, but because it felt honest,” says the actor, who portrays a Mixed Martial Arts fighter in the action drama.

A lot of training went into becoming the character. Surya says, “There was fitness, boxing drills, and understanding how fighters move and think. But beyond the physical part, it was about [understanding] this character’s silence and his scars. He doesn’t say much, but there’s a lot going on beneath the surface.”

Being Vijay’s son brings both attention and expectations. As he follows in his father’s footsteps, Surya is aware of his privilege and the responsibilities it comes with.

“There is definitely the weight [of pressure]. But I see it as a responsibility. I’ve watched Appa work with so much respect for the craft, and such humility. If I can carry even a little of that forward, I’ll feel I’m on the right path. I want to make him proud — not by copying his journey, but by building mine with the same values. I’ve had access and the privilege of being Vijay Sethupathi’s son. But staying here and earning respect is entirely on me. I hope people give me the space to grow on my own terms.”

Jaat makers rope in four action directors to make film Sunny Deol's biggest action drama

Jaat makers rope in four action directors to make film Sunny Deol's biggest action drama
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; January 19, 2025)

When Telugu director Gopichand Malineni had announced his next with Sunny Deol, he had promised that it would be an action extravaganza (Deol rises again as a one-man army, June 24). Seven months and four schedules later, it looks like he has stayed true to his word. In his bid to make Jaat one of Deol’s biggest action films, the director has roped in four stunt directors, each of whom has designed an elaborate action block.

Sources tell us that Anal Arasu, Ram-Lakshman, Naga Venkat Naga, and Peter Hein of Kalki 2898 AD (2024) fame lead the action team. A source says, “The sets have been designed by Avinash Kolla. The first set-piece involved a car chase sequence choreographed by Peter Hein. Another action block involves hand-to-hand combat that takes place inside a police station and ends with Sunny using a huge fan as a weapon. It was choreographed by Naga Venkat. Both the set-pieces were shot in Hyderabad last year. Another fight sequence aboard a ship was designed by Ram-Lakshman, and filmed at the Panambur port in Mangalore last month. Sunny also shot an ambitious action piece set in Agumbe forest in Mangalore last November. It will be one of the major highlights of the film.”

Jaat, also starring Saiyami Kher and Regina Cassandra, is almost complete, save for one week’s shoot. Next week, Deol will kick off the last leg of the film in Mangalore. The source adds, “Only a few days’ work remains on Jaat. The major action blocks are complete.”

If Deol’s protagonist who rises against the corrupt system is being shown as a mighty hero, the antagonists need to be powerful too. Keeping that in mind, Malineni has apparently roped in six actors as villains.

“Sunny will face five villains, played by Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, Ajay Ghosh, Dayanand Shetty, Jagpathi Babu and Babloo Prithiveeraj. The director wants to make it bigger than Gadar 2: The Katha Continues [2023] in terms of action,” says the insider. Jaat will be released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil.

Atlee ropes in action directors of films like Captain America and Dunkirk for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan

Jawan: Atlee ropes in action directors of films like 'Captain America' and 'Dunkirk' for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer

Atlee ropes in six action directors for Jawan, including stunt choreographers of Captain America and Dunkirk
Letty Mariam Abraham (MID-DAY; August 22, 2023)

Shah Rukh Khan may not have done many action films in the past, but Pathaan’s mammoth success has proved that the audience loves him in the genre. Now, director Atlee is upping the ante with Jawan. Sources tell us that Atlee has roped in six action directors — Spiro Razatos, Yannick Ben, Craig Macrae, Kecha Khamphakdee, Sunil Rodrigues and Anal Arasu.

Hollywood action director Razatos has worked on The Fate of the Furious (2017) and Captain America: Civil War (2016), while Ben is known as a seasoned Parkour tutor, choreographing action in Transporter 3 (2008) and Dunkirk (2017). Macrae is the mind behind the set-pieces in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Khamphakdee, who won the National Award for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), was an obvious choice for Atlee, as was Rodrigues after collaborating with Khan in Pathaan. The director was equally impressed by Arasu’s work in Sultan (2016).

A source shares that varied forms of action will be on display in the Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi-starrer. “Jawan [will] include hand-to-hand combat, bike sequences, and truck and car chases. These action set-pieces add to Atlee’s vision of making a tentpole action entertainer.”

Salman Khan conceptualizes 2 grand entry scenes for Venkatesh and Jagapathi Babu in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan

Start with a stunt, says Salman Khan

Sources say Khan, with stunt choreographers, conceptualized two elaborate introductory action scenes for Telugu stars Venkatesh and Jagapathi Babu in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; April 3, 2023)

It’s easy to tell from the Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (KKBKKJ) teaser that Salman Khan’s offering will be an action extravaganza. However, it’s not only the superstar who will flex his muscles and take on the baddies. We hear Khan, who is producing Farhad Samji’s directorial venture, has conceptualized two heavy-duty action sequences that will mark Venkatesh and Jagapathi Babu’s entry in the movie. The actor sat down with stunt directors Anbumani-Arivumani (Anbariv), and Anal Arasu to design scenes that would do justice to the senior Telugu actors.

The actor-producer has been deeply involved in every aspect of the film, from the music to choreography. A source tells us, “Salman wants Venkatesh and Jagapathi’s entry sequences to elicit claps and whistles from the audience. For Venkatesh’s introduction scene, an elaborate set of a hilltop was built at the Golden Tobacco factory in Mumbai. Production designer Rajat Poddarr created a set-up of a south Indian village, with a rocky hill overlooking it. A separate set was built for Jagapathi’s fight sequence, with each set taking more than two months to be constructed.”

The Eid release — that also stars Pooja Hegde, Bhumika Chawla, Jassie Gill and Raghav Juyal — revolves around four brothers, with Khan playing the eldest. While Babu portrays a don, Venkatesh essays the role of Hegde’s father, a respected man in a village who is compelled to resort to violence. The source adds that Khan has mounted Venkatesh’s introduction scene on a grand scale.

“Salman sat for hours with Anbariv, cracking the set-piece. He wanted Venkatesh’s opening scene to be perfect, as the film sees him returning to Hindi cinema after 28 years.”

It is heard that Khan, in his pursuit to give his fans a complete entertainer, is overseeing every aspect of the film, down to the last detail. “Salman was involved in the recently released song, Bathukamma, which is choreographed by Jani Master and composed by Ravi Basrur. He was a part of the music sittings. It was the superstar who told costume designer Ashley Rebello to dress him in a white-and-gold lungi and kurta.”

Tiger Shroff moonwalks into Munna Michael's action sequences

Even the stunts in the actor’s upcoming musical will bear the stamp of King of Pop Michael Jackson’s legendary moves
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 19, 2017)

Tiger Shroff is kicking his tribute to idol Michael Jackson in Sabbir Khan’s upcoming film Munna Michael up several notches. Mirror has learnt that even the actor’s action sequences in the film are inspired by the late pop icon’s dance moves.

Sabbir confirmed the news, saying, “Generally, the choreographer and action director work separately on their portions, but for this film I’ve got my fight masters, Ravi Varma and Anal Arasu, and the Los Angeles dance troupe that has toured with Michael Jackson and Ganesh Acharya who choreographed Tiger in this film, to work together. The action scenes are integrated with the dance moves and you will see Tiger moon-walking during one of the stunts.”

As part of the prep for the said sequences, Sabbir informs that he had asked his action directors to watch MJ’s performance videos. “When we were brainstorming, all of us were really kicked about it,” he adds.

In the film, which marks Tiger’s leading lady Nidhhi Agerwal’s acting debut, the actor plays a starry-eyed MJ fan. In an earlier interview (January 29) to Mirror, the 27-year-old actor had revealed that he’d been a fan of the King of Pop ever since he was six.

“My father’s (Jackie Shroff) mother had a tape of Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' and I was mesmerised by the video. I wasn’t even born when MJ moonwalked on planet earth and I’d try to do the same in our apartment. His track 'Billie Jean' is another one of my favourites,” Tiger had said.
