Amitabh Bachchan gifts Kaun Banega Crorepati costumes to 22 fans at Jalsa

For 22 fans of Amitabh Bachchan across India, Sunday's visit to Jalsa, the actor’s Juhu residence, turned into a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The actor invited a select group of fans, whom he often refers to as his extended family, and gifted them costumes used during the shooting of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).
Some received gifts in person, while others later received them through courier. According to fans present at the interaction, Bachchan said he wanted to share something that had been an important part of his life.

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has sold two adjoining luxury apartments spread over a total 3,640 sq ft in a high-rise residential tower in Mumbai’s western suburb Goregaon for a total of Rs 12 crore.
Both apartments are located on the 47th floor of the building and measure 1,820 sq ft each. The first transaction was registered on October 31, for Rs 6 crore, while the second on Saturday, for the same amount. The deals attracted a total stamp duty of Rs 60 lakh.
The transactions were executed separately with individual buyers, showed the documents accessed through realty data analytics platform CRE Matrix. The agreements include two car parking spaces each.
ET’s email query to Bachchan’s team remained unanswered until the time of going to press.
The sale adds to a series of recent property transactions in Mumbai involving high-value assets owned by film personalities. Bachchan and his family hold multiple real estate properties across the city, including residential holdings in Juhu and other prime areas.
In recent months, several prominent transactions have been recorded in the city’s premium housing segment, reflecting continued activity among high-net-worth individuals and professionals from the film and business community.

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has acquired three adjacent land parcels in Alibaug near the country's financial capital Mumbai to build a luxury villa in the beach town known for sea view properties of prominent personalities.
The land parcels measure a quarter of an acre for which the actor has paid nearly Rs 10 crore and the transaction was registered Tuesday.
The veteran actor has acquired the plots from HOABL Landbuild and paid stamp duty worth nearly Rs 40 lakhs in total for three separate deals, showed the documents accessed through realty data analytics firm CRE Matrix.
Prior to this, the Bachchan family had acquired another quarter of an acre plot in Ayodhya for Rs. 12.42 crore and had also acquired 1.25 acres of land for the Harivansh Rai Bachchan Memorial Trust in the temple town.
Real estate continues to stand out as a top choice for investments among high net-worth individuals. Bollywood figures are actively acquiring properties, not just for personal use but also as investment ventures.
Recently, Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan also made his first land investment by purchasing a 2,000 sq ft plot in the same coastal development project in Alibaug. Prior to that, actor Kriti Sanon had also bought a similar size of land parcel here.

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has bought two apartments in a premium residential project in Mumbai’s Borivali suburb where his son Abhishek Bachchan recently acquired six apartments.
The deal comes immediately after the veteran actor recently purchased three more office properties spread across three floors in a commercial project in Oshiwara locality of Mumbai’s western suburb of Andheri.
Bachchan purchased apartments in Borivali worth nearly Rs 7 crores from Incline Realty, a subsidiary of Oberoi Realty. These apartments spread over 2,188 sq ft are located on the 57th floor of the tower, the same floor where his son Abhishek’s apartments are situated.
Bachchan paid stamp duty of Rs 40.72 lakh for the registration of both the deals that took place on May 29, showed the documents accessed through Zapkey.com
These deals involving the Bachchan family have created a buzz in the property market as most transactions involving celebrities were so far used to be concluded in South, Central Mumbai and prime localities such as Bandra, Khar and Juhu.

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has purchased three more office properties spread across three floors in a commercial project in Oshiwara locality of Mumbai’s western suburb Andheri for nearly Rs 60 crore.
The actor already owns four offices totalling over 12,000 sq ft built up and 10,800 sq ft carpet area in the same commercial tower. ET had reported in September that these offices spanning an entire floor were bought and leased to music entertainment company Warner Music India through a long-term agreement for a total tenure of five years.
The new office space spread over 8,429 sq ft carpet area is on the 27th, 28th, and 29th floor of the ready to move commercial tower. As part of the deal, the buyer will also get exclusive access to three car parking slots in the building.
Bachchan has paid stamp duty of over Rs 3.57 crore for the registration of the deal that took place on June 20, showed the documents accessed through FloorTap.com, market-place for commercial properties.
The veteran actor recently acquired a land parcel from the House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL) in Alibaug near Mumbai to build a luxury villa in the beach town known for sea view properties of rich and famous personalities. In January, he had purchased another land parcel in a 7-star mixed-use development of the developer to construct a house near the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.
The Bachchan family owns several properties in Mumbai. Recently Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya Bachchan gifted their lavish bungalow, Prateeksha, in plush Juhu locality of Mumbai to their daughter Shweta Nanda. The clock inches toward 5.30 pm and the crowd gets restive. It’s a sultry Sunday evening, beachgoers at Juhu are sipping on tender coconuts, chauffeurs lounging outside bungalows. But this street in suburban Mumbai that hosts Bollywood’s most famous address is bustling with anticipation. Jalsa, true to its name, is preparing for a weekly festival of sound and light. To make the wait bearable, large pedestal fans rotate air gently in the direction of the visitors. Water coolers stand ready to quench their thirst; many have journeyed from remote corners of the country.
Cries of ‘Ganpati bappa morya’ can be heard. It’s an affectionate shout-out to Mumbai’s presiding deity who is considered a remover of obstacles. Cameras are flashing. Suddenly, at a mere suggestion of movement from within, a roar erupts. From behind grand gates, the social media team emerges with cameras to document the moment when real life will intersect with a world of fantasy. Some wave frantically as lenses train to capture the euphoria.
At the appointed time, the traffic halts for the impending spectacle. “It’s a scene reminiscent of ancient kingdoms heralding the arrival of their revered monarch,” says Avnish Ravikanth, a Juhu resident who often strolls by on Sundays to catch a glimpse of the “living legend”. He’s only half joking.
Finally, the gates open, and to the accompaniment of screams, shouts and laughter, Amitabh Bachchan, 81, walks up and climbs a wooden dais. He’s wearing a jacket and looks taller. He smiles, waves with one hand and then the other, greets everyone with a “namaskaar”, points specifically to those at the rear to acknowledge their presence, even gestures that he’s willing to sign autographs later. The moment is fleeting but Pooja Vishnoi, a 28-year-old techie visiting from Jaipur, remembers the experience afterwards as “a whirlwind of admiration and awe”.
‘What A Comeback!’
Gopal Bhatia, a 56-year-old resident of Kalyan who often escorts relatives visiting from north India to the Sunday darshan, believes that the blend of real-life persona with on-screen characters is what cements Amitabh Bachchan’s status as a superstar even today. A businessman himself, Bhatia can identify with the resilience with which the actor bounced back from bankruptcy after his talent agency-cumevent managing firm, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd (ABCL), tanked in 1999. It’s a story that’s been told and retold and has a narrative that vindicates the faith of every admirer. “He had creditors at his door. Yet he resurrected his career and reached even greater heights of stardom. How can one not be inspired by such a comeback?” says Bhatia.
Indeed, Bachchan is a man of comebacks, the one who returns to avenge his mother, or fulfil an oath made to a loyal friend, regardless of the price to be paid. The legend of his resurgence begins with a near fatal accident in 1982 on the sets of Coolie. A serious injury in the gut led to an emergency sur gery at St Philomena’s in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) after which he was flown to Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai, where he was declared “clinically dead for a couple of minutes,” in his own words, before doctors managed to revive him with massive doses of steroids. The 81-year-old’s darshans on Sundays began then as a thanksgiving for the blessings of his well-wishers.
This weekly ritual has now woven itself into the social fabric of the city for four decades, a testament to the enduring adoration for an icon. It has no parallel or precedent anywhere: the Marlon Brandos and Clint Eastwoods of Hollywood have never expressed so much gratitude to their fans; Kollywood filmgoers have elected their idols as chief ministers but neither demanded nor received an emotionally transactional relationship; even in Bollywood, at the height of Rajesh Khanna’s fame, the frenzy of fans outside his sea-facing bungalow on Carter Road was rarely reciprocated. Among the present lot, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan wave and blow kisses to the multitudes outside their homes on a special occasion like a birthday, but that’s about it.
The Extended Family
Bachchan’s appearances have the air of a social engagement. The gathering includes the Extended Family (EF), as it’s known. Some are familiar faces to him. Prashant Kawadia, a Mumbai suburbanite, who has achieved a milestone of attending over 240 such darshans, says, “Bachchan has a unique way of cherishing and nurturing his admirers, which sets him apart.”
Kawadia has attended several episodes of the quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ anchored by the actor. Years back, when Bachchan hosted a party for ardent fans — he addresses them as “EF” in his blog posts — Kawadia was among the 14 Indian invitees and 10 overseas guests.
According to him, no star possesses the magnetic appeal that his idol exudes — the impact extends to public causes he champions. Born in 1979, Kawadia’s life took a significant turn when he contracted polio as a toddler. Back then in India, children from affluent backgrounds or those in urban areas were among the fortunate ones to receive a vaccine. In 2002, during a surge in polio incidence, Bachchan became brand ambassador for the “Do Boondh Zindagi Ki” campaign that played a pivotal role in eradicating the disease in India. “Since 2011, no babies have been born with polio — a remarkable accomplishment. What greater gift can a star offer to the world?” says Kawadia.
If those regaled by the actor’s charisma in the dark of an auditorium or the solitude of their homes feel a sense of kinship, Bachchan relates to them just as much. In May 2023, the actor shared thoughts on how he would hurry back from work to be present at the gates of Jalsa (GOJ) at the chosen hour. “Rush rush rush .. !! Rush through the work and the day to be presentable at the GOJ .. and made it in enough time to be at the box .. and to greet and send the love for the well-wishers of the Sunday.”
There is even an occasional lament when fewer people show up. Post-Covid, the star wrote, “I do observe though that the numbers are in lesser magnitude and the enthusiasm has lessened and the screams of joy now transferred to the mobile camera .. and that is more evident now an indication that time has moved on and nothing lasts forever.” It seemed as much a comment on the transient nature of stardom.
Multi-Generational Fan Base
What could Pooja Vishnoi, 28-yearold techie from Jaipur, S K Marvada, middle-aged painter from Bhuj, Belgian-born chartered accountant Sonia Saharan, and Lekhraj Kasabh, labourer from Pathankot, possibly have in common? They represent a cross-section of weekly visitors at the gates of Jalsa. Evidently, the shape-shifting nature of Bachchan’s craft speaks to a diverse and multi-generational audience.
While older generations continue to relish classics like Sholay, Namak Haram, and Namak Halal, the more recent Piku, Pink, Wazir, and Paa captivate millennials. With more than 200 movies, numerous songs, overseas concerts, public awareness campaigns, brand advertisements and the KBC TV quiz show which he has hosted non-stop since 2000 (barring a season in 2007 done by Shah Rukh Khan), it’s a career that can be feted for its longevity alone: he has been in business since 1969 when he lent his baritone to Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome.
His powers of reinvention and his ability to discern changing tastes are spoken of by collaborators. He knew the Angry Young Man that he played repeatedly was a thing of the past by the mid-90s; it was replaced by a more realistic, restrained and sometimes magisterial presence. Vishnoi, the techie from Jaipur whose favourite films are Pink and Piku, says, “The love for Bachchan spans generations in my family. It’s a shared passion that I can discuss with my parents. Sometimes, my father even reenacts his iconic scenes.” She had carved out time from her work schedule to visit Jalsa during a brief three-day stint in Mumbai.
Others have travelled across the globe. A quartet of friends from Belgium, Holland and Suriname have come with a large banner that reads, “Autograph please. We are here from Belgium.” Sonia Saharan says the allure of Bachchan was something she experienced growing up in Belgium. Saharan and her Dutch friend, Sharmila Mitrasing, recall their families going to great lengths to source video cassettes and DVDs of his blockbusters. “His films are wholesome. There’s always a lesson to be learned.”
‘My Wait Will End Today’
Finally, when the moment arrives and Bachchan appears with folded hands, the feeling it evokes in many is the nostalgia of a bygone era when movies like Khuda Gawah, Hum, and Agneepath captivated them with larger-than-life narratives and charismatic performances. An overwhelmed Lekhraj bows down. It is the end of his journey.
Dressed in a suit with a woollen scarf and polished shoes, ‘Jai Amitabh Bachchan’ tattooed on his forearm, this tempo driver from Pathankot had travelled to Mumbai weeks ago to meet “tauji (father’s elder brother)”. He even took on odd jobs on construction sites and restaurants in the city to sustain himself because Bachchan had failed to turn up for two Sundays in a row due to travel commitments. “I have seen all his movies, some of them more than 50 times.”
He is carrying albums with pictures of the actor and letters written by him. There are photos of every October 11 celebration when he ordered cakes to mark the actor’s birthday. “Not only has he written back to me, but also sent photo frames of his family. Which superstar would go to the extent of doing that?” He cries, squats on the floor and after the crowd disperses, he moves towards the gates of Jalsa to touch his head to the ground.
The finale is, of course, provided by Bachchan himself later. Offerings from fans like Lekhraj are signed and returned, to show he cares. There’s a line immortalised by the superstar – “Mard ko dard nahi hota”. In Bachchan’s case, nothing would be further from the truth. He has doubts about whether fans will turn up next Sunday. “Will they .. won’t they .. ? The eternal question mark before the GOJ,” he said once in a blog. “That Chaplin question .. the presence at the Academy Awards for a Lifetime Achievement presentation for him, after returning to USA, from a sort of exile, being labelled a Communist, which was a misnomer .. and the ask as he stands backstage to be brought on and decorated ..‘will they clap for me ..’?

“The actor has bought the land parcel spread over a quarter of an acre from The House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL) for over Rs 10 crore and the transaction was registered late last week,” said one of the persons mentioned above.
In January, the veteran actor purchased another land parcel in a 7-star mixed-use development of the developer to construct a house near the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya that was inaugurated recently.

This was the second such deal concluded by her in the last eight months. Last year too, Khan had purchased another land parcel spanning 1.5 acres in Alibaug.
Given its proximity to the country’s commercial capital, Alibaug has emerged as the new hotspot for celebrities and high-profile personalities.
Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone also recently joined the ranks of investors in this region, alongside other prominent figures such as Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma. In 2022, cricketer Virat Kohli and his actress wife Anushka Sharma together acquired an 8-acre plot here.
The government’s initiatives aimed at improving connectivity between Mumbai and Alibaug are catalyzing real estate development in the area, elevating its appeal among developers, homebuyers and investors.
Previously, limited connectivity hindered the growth of real estate in Alibaug. However, with various infrastructure projects underway, travel time is expected to decrease significantly, from over three hours to just over an hour.
Key infrastructure projects such as the Virar-Alibaug corridor, roll-on-roll-off (RORO) service from Mumbai, Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), widening of Mumbai-Goa Road and Vadkhal Alibaug Road, and Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor are expected to stimulate development and investment in the region.
India's luxury real estate segment has emerged as a driving force for the sector post-pandemic and continues to gather momentum. Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has leased out four of his office properties spanning an entire floor in a commercial tower in Oshiwara locality of Mumbai’s Andheri suburb to music entertainment company Warner Music India through a long-term agreement for a total tenure of five years.
The tenant will be paying total rentals of over Rs 11 crore through the entire lease tenure. The lease will be operative starting from March 2024. ET had reported in September that Bachchan bought these four offices totalling over 12,000 sq ft built up and 10,800 sq ft carpet area for nearly Rs 29 crore.
The tenant will be paying monthly rentals of Rs 170 per sq ft for the first three years and the lease agreement includes a clause to escalate rentals by 15% thereafter for the next two years taking it to Rs 195.50 per sq ft per month, showed documents accessed through Propstack.
The newly developed project has already received its occupation certificate in June and the developer has handed over the possession of these offices to Bachchan in September.
As part of the lease agreement, the tenant will also get exclusive access to a total 12 car parking slots in the tower. Of these, four parking slots will be premium car parking spaces for high-end luxury SUVs.
Warner Music India, as the tenant of the property, will have a lock-in period of initial three years, while Bachchan’s lock-in period spans across the entire tenure of the lease. The company has paid an upfront security deposit of Rs 1.03 crore at the time of registration of the transaction that took place on December 8.
ET’s separate email queries to Bachchan’s team and Warner Music India remained unanswered until the time of going to press.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, renowned figures in Bollywood, have gifted their lavish bungalow, Pratiksha, in plush Juhu locality of Mumbai to their daughter Shweta Nanda.
The transfer of ownership was formalized through two distinct gift deeds, each corresponding to a specific plot on which the bungalow stands.
The deeds for the bungalow spread over a total 16,840 sq ft were executed on November 8th and registered the next day.
The Bachchan family has paid a total stamp duty worth Rs 50.65 lakh for both the gift deeds, showed the documents accessed through Zapkey.com. The market value of the bungalow is shown as over Rs 50.63 crore.
As per the current regulations, a residential property gifted by father to either daughter or son in Mumbai attracts stamp duty of nominal Rs 200 along with metro cess of 1% per deed.
One of the two plots the bungalow is built on is spread over 9,585 sq ft and was jointly owned by Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, while the other plot spread over 7,255 sq ft was owned by Amitabh alone.

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya Bachchan have gifted their Juhu bungalow, Pratiksha, worth Rs 50 crore, to daughter Shweta Nanda, as per documents accessed by TOI.
The bungalow, one of the landmark residential properties in Mumbai, sees hordes of crowds at its gate every day. The plot is spread over roughly 17,000sqft. The property deed transferring the bungalow and its registration was done early this month. The actor paid a stamp duty of Rs 50.7 lakh. The transfer was done through two gift deeds.
The Bachchans moved into Pratiksha in 1976 and it is among several properties they own in Mumbai, including Jalsa and Janak in Juhu. The family has also invested in luxury apartments and commercial offices in upmarket city locations. Early this year, Jaya submitted a proposal for additional construction and alterations to an existing building in Kapol Society, Juhu Vile Parle. Plot No B2 (Jalsa) was approved in 1984 with a base ment, ground and two upper floors. The new proposal is to build the entire second floor (currently, it is only partly built) and an additional floor for residential use.
In one of his blogs a couple of years ago, Bachchan wrote how his father, the renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, gave Pratiksha its name. “Babuji saw the house as we invited him and Maaji to now live with us and named it... Prateeksha... it came from a line of one of his works.‘Swagat sabke liye yaha par, nahi kisi ke liye prateeksha...’ Welcome there is for all in this abode, but we are not waiting for anyone.”

What would be a fitting way to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of Indian cinema’s giants? While many would opt for a grand celebration, Amitabh Bachchan thinks otherwise. The megastar has chosen to mark his milestone birthday today with the two things he cherishes the most — devotion, and family. On Monday afternoon, he flew off to Tirupati to ring in his big day on an auspicious note. The veteran actor, along with his family, will offer a special puja at the Venkateswara Temple today.
Bachchan, who has been filming Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) 14, has taken a few days off from the shoot. A source reveals, “After spending Monday night at Tirupati, the family will have a special puja early in the morning, and are likely to fly back to Mumbai later in the day. They have decided against a celebration due to the demise of Samajwadi Party chief and family friend Mulayam Singh Yadav.”
Bachchan is known to have a birthday ritual — when in the city, he begins his day with a puja at Jalsa, after which he heads to Pratiksha and spends a few hours in his late parents’ room. His day is incomplete until he meets his legion of fans who throng his Juhu residence for a glimpse of him. For the evening, a quiet dinner has been lined up with wife Jaya, children Abhishek and Shweta Nanda, daughter-in-law Aishwarya, and grandchildren Navya Naveli, Agastya and Aaradhya.
To mark the occasion, the makers of KBC have shot a special episode that sees actor-wife Jaya, and Abhishek take the hot seat opposite Bachchan.
Fans cheer on for Big B
Among Bachchan’s biggest fan clubs, the AB EF Team Worldwide is celebrating its idol’s landmark birthday over two days across Mumbai and Chennai. The function will start with a prayer at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu.
Sanjay Jumani, administrator of the fan club, says, “We had a round of cake-cutting for 2,350 kids of the Gold Heart Foundation in Chennai. We also sponsored [essentials] at an old-age home in Mahakali Caves.”
A special van featuring Bachchan’s looks from his various films will do the rounds of Juhu today. On Monday, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda attended a special screening of Don at PVR Juhu, with the megastar’s fans.

A staff member out of 31 in actor Amitabh Bachchan’s bungalow at Juhu and two staff members in MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s bungalow at Dadar tested positive for Coronavirus on Wednesday.
Assistant municipal commissioner of K West ward Prithviraj Chavan confirmed the report about the staff member testing positive at Bachchan's bungalow. None of the family members from the Bachchan family is in high-risk contact with the staff member who tested positive, BMC said.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut’s mother, wife, daughter and niece also tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday. They have been kept under home isolation.

According to Mumbai civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC, one member of the staff at Amitabh Bachchan's bungalow has tested positive and is asymptomatic, reports news agency PTI. "The staff has been quarantined at CCC-2 (COVID Care Center-2) of the BMC," The BMC official was quoted by PTI as saying.
Last year in May, Amitabh Bachchan received his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine. He wrote, "Doosra bhi ho gaya. COVID wala, Cricket wala nahin, sorry sorry that was a really bad one..."

Mumbai: The BMC is giving “lame excuses” and delaying the demolition of the compound wall of actor Amitabh Bachchan’s Pratiksha bungalow in Juhu for a road-widening project, Maharashtra Lokayukta Justice V M Kanade said on Monday.
Last month, the BMC had submitted that it hasn’t taken over a portion of land from Pratiksha bungalow plot as it does not have a contractor in place for the road-widening project. It has said that it would raze the compound wall and acquire the land in the next financial year when a road contractor is appointed for the purpose.
In his order, Justice Kanade said: “In my view, the reason given by the BMC for not carrying out the demolition doesn’t appear to be correct. Whenever a road-widening project is undertaken, adequate budgetary provision is made by the BMC for implementation. It is obvious that the BMC is delaying the demolition of the boundary wall...by giving lame excuses. It is a matter of common knowledge that after May 30, no demolition work is carried out during monsoon. The work, therefore, would be delayed by at least one more year.”
In 2017, the actor’s family had been asked to surrender a portion of the land from Pratiksha bungalow, off Linking Road in Juhu, along with owners of neighbou-ring plots, to reduce traffic in the lane leading from Pratiksha towards ISKCON temple. The BMC will take the compound portion of the structures and widen Sant Dnyaneshwar Road from 40ft to 60ft.
Congress corporator Tulip Miranda, who had complained to Maharashtra Lokayukta in October 2021 about the civic inaction, said that BMC’s reply was bizarre. “In 2019, the BMC had demolished the boundary wall of a building premises adjoining Bachchan’s bungalow and took over a portion of its land for the road-widening. However, the compound of Pratiksha was left untouched. Waiting for a contractor before land acquisition for road-widening is unheard of,” Miranda said.
“The Lokayukta has not accepted the BMC’s bizarre report and has asked for a response from the roads department at the next hearing. We will sit on a dharna if the BMC fails to take action,” the corporator added.

Mumbai: The BMC has said it hasn’t taken over a portion of land from actor Amitabh Bachchan’s Pratiksha bungalow plot as it does not have a contractor in place for the road-widening project.
In a report submitted to Lokayukta Justice V M Kanade, the BMC has said it does not have a road contractor for widening the Juhu road and so it will take over a portion of the bungalow land and demolish the compound wall in the next financial year when a road contractor is appointed for the purpose.
Congress corporator Tulip Miranda had complained to Maharashtra Lokayukta that the BMC had failed to take over the land from Bachchan for road widening since 2017. A hearing on the complaint was held on Friday.
“A notice was given for the bungalow plot in 2017 under Section 299 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act. There was some issue about the exact demarcation of the road line, so a fresh survey was conducted by land record officials in 2019. The final demarcation was received in July 2021. Amitabh Bachchan will have to give up 230 square metres of land and the compound wall will have to be moved by 2 to 3 metres. The open space of the bungalow and security cabin will be affected in this acquisition,” said Prithviraj Chavan, assistant municipal commissioner, K-West Ward, in his report to the Lokayukta.
“We had asked the roads department if they have a contractor in place for road widening. They said they don’t have one now and they will take up road widening in the next financial year. Since there is no road contractor available, we will take further action after one is appointed,” Chavan said in the report.

Mumbai: Four years after receiving a BMC notice, actor Amitabh Bachchan’s family will finally have to part with a portion of their Prateeksha bungalow plot in Juhu for widening of the adjoining Sant Dnyaneshwar Marg. The BMC has asked Mumbai suburban collector Milind Borkar to instruct city survey officials to demarcate the exact portion required for the road-widening project, reports Chaitanya Marpakwar.
To eradicate the traffic bottlenecks in the lane leading from Prateeksha towards ISKCON temple, the BMC is taking over a portion of properties to widen Sant Dnyaneshwar Marg, which connects Chandan Cinema area to Link Road, from 45ft to 60ft. The work is almost done, but for the stretch in front of Prateeksha.

In 2019, the BMC demolished the boundary wall of a building adjoining Prateeksha, but the superstar’s bungalow was left untouched.
Congress corporator Tulip Miranda recently took up the issue with the K-West ward and claimed that the BMC was deliberately delaying the acquisition of the Bachchan property. “The adjacent properties have been acquired, but only Prateeksha bungalow has been left untouched. By sending the issue to the city survey officials, the BMC is only buying time...If the acquisition is not done, we will file a complaint with the Lokayukta,” Miranda said.
In a written reply to Miranda, K-West ward officials said the BMC would acquire the land as soon as the city survey office finalises the demarcation of the portion of the Prateeksha plot that is required. Civic officials said they had applied for getting the Prateeksha plot demarcated in December 2019 and also paid the fees. A joint measurement for the demarcation was held in February 2021. A senior official said city survey officials had pointed out some discrepancies in the maps, but all the details were submitted to their office to clarify the deviations. Bachchan did not respond to queries from TOI.

The property is being developed by Crystal Pride Developers. The actor will have two floors to himself in the building. Bachchan will have six car parks too. The registration of the property was done in April and he has paid stamp duty of Rs 62 lakh.
This will be Bachchan's fifth property in the western suburbs. He already has four luxurious bungalows in Juhu including Prateeksha, Janak, Jalsa, and Amu bungalows. Bachchans at present reside at Jalsa and Amu bungalow and Janak is the office address of the Bachchans.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has reportedly purchased a plush new duplex apartment worth Rs 31 crore in Mumbai. It is a 5,184 sq ft property with six car parks, which was bought way back in December 2020 but registered in April 2021.
According to a report published in Moneycontrol.com, project Atlantis is by a Tier-2 builder, Crystal Group, as per registration documents originally accessed by Zapkey.com. The legendary star's swanky new property has as many as six-car parkings and is on the 27th and 28th floor respectively.

Mumbai: Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (46) and her daughter Aaradhya (8) tested positive for the Coronavirus on Sunday, a day after her superstar father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan and actor husband Abhishek were hospitalised with the infection.The mother and daughter, both asymptomatic, decided to self-isolate at home by giving BMC a declaration.
Amitabh’s actress wife, Jaya, tested negative, as did their daughter Sweta Bachchan Nanda and her family.
Municipal officials said that in the family, only Abhishek had been stepping out for dubbing work.
The condition of Amitabh (77) and Abhishek (44) was said to be stable at Nanavati Hospital, where they were admitted on Saturday.
Dr Abdul Samad Ansari, head of critical care at Nanavati, said that their line of treatment was supportive therapy for now.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter Aaradhya tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, while Jaya Bachchan tested negative. On Saturday night, Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek, who are being treated at a suburban hospital in Mumbai, took to social media to inform people that they have tested positive for COVID-19. In an official statement, the doctors at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital said that Amitabh Bachchan is stable with mild symptoms and is currently in the isolation unit of the hospital.Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) arrived at the Bachchans’ bungalows to sanitize the premises. A source from the BMC said, “Four teams from the K-West ward sanitised their four bungalows — Jalsa, Pratiksha, Janak and Varsha — thoroughly. Later, the healthcare team from the ward conducted thermal screening of around 45 staff members present there. They have been asked to quarantine at home.”
Reportedly, the properties have been declared as containment zones. Messages wishing the Bachchans a speedy recovery poured in on social media from members of the film fraternity, politicians and fans.

The BMC on Sunday sealed all four bungalows belonging to the Bachchans in Juhu after it was confirmed that four members of the family—Amitabh, son Abhishek, daughter-inlaw Aishwarya and granddaughter Aaradhya—have tested positive for Covid-19. While Amitabh and Abhishek, who have mild symptoms, are undergoing treatment at an isolation ward in Nanavati hospital, Aishwarya and Aaradhya tested positive on Sunday, but are asymptomatic.
According to BMC officials, the civic body has sought a written declaration from the actress, if she and her daughter want to quarantine at home or else, they too would be shifted to the hospital. Jaya Bachchan’s results, meanwhile, have come back negative but she will be tested again. Samples of 16 staffers have also been taken for Covid-19 testing, including the family’s security guards and house help. The results are expected today.
“There is enough space in Jalsa (the bungalow where the Bachchans reside) for the staff to be put in isolation. We are providing them with all the help,” a senior civic official told Mirror, adding that all four bungalows have been sealed and marked as containment zones. “Four sanitisation and health teams were formed to inspect and sanitise the bungalows and screen their staff. In all, 30 people, who came in contact with the Bachchans, have been identified as high-risk. Those with symptoms will be tested,” the official added.
Confirming the news, Vishwas Mote, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, K-West Ward, said, “All four bungalows of the Bachchan family — Jalsa, Janak, Prateeksha and Vatsa — have been sealed and declared as containment zone as per protocol. We are conducting contact tracing among all staff members, and till now, 30 have been identified as high-risk.”

Leading publicist Archana Sadanand escaped a freak fire accident during a Diwali party at Amitabh Bachchan's Juhu home Jalsa thanks to Shah Rukh Khan's presence of mind.Sadanand, who has represented Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for over a decade, sustained burn injuries to her hands and right leg after her lehenga came in contact with a diya. She is recuperating at Nanavati Hospital.
Sources in Nanavati Hospital told mid-day that Sadanand, who was admitted in the wee hours of Monday, is kept in isolation in the ICU to prevent infections. Doctors said she sustained 15 per cent burns. Khan also suffered minor burns.
The Bachchan Diwali party is among the most coveted in town and had Bollywood A-listers and the Ambanis in attendance. The accident happened very late, when there were few guests around, said sources.
"It was just after 3 am and a few guests were still around," an insider told mid-day.
"Archana was with her daughter in the courtyard when her lehenga caught fire. Those around were stunned and didn't know what to do. Shah Rukh had the presence of mind, rushed to Archana, and put out the fire. He, too, sustained minor burns while dousing the flames with a jacket. His only thought was to put out the fire."
Hospital sources said Sadanand is under the care of Dr Devyani B Venkat, a plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, who recently joined Nanavati after returning from the US. Dr Venkat is the daughter of renowned gastroenterologist Jayant Barve, who treats Bachchan Sr.
Sources said Sadanand is almost like family for the Bachchans.
When mid-day contacted her, Dr Venkat refused to comment. mid-day's attempts to contact the Bachchans and Khan were also unsuccessful till press time. Hospital sources, however, said Sadanand was recovering well and was even made to walk for a few minutes inside the isolated ICU on Tuesday. She is not allowed visitors as of now.
Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Manoj Kumar Sharma told mid-day, "We have been intimated by Nanavati Hospital about the admission of the patient. The local police recorded her statement, where she confirmed it was an unfortunate accident."

The proximity of four of those five bungalows, three of which — Ammu, Jalsa, and Mansa — are just separated by compound walls, and Janak that is one lane away, definitely makes it seem like the Bachchan family has earmarked an island for themselves. Of course, Prateeksha that is a few furlongs away completes the quintuple count of residences.
Meet Prateeksha
Amitabh Bachchan’s first famous address in Mumbai. The place continues to remain a landmark on Juhu’s busy 10th Road. It was ‘attached’ when the Hindi cinema legend got into a financial mess post the launch of his production company ABCL in the mid-’90s. However, he managed to avert the auction bid when he paid back all the monies he owed with interest to his borrowing bank.
Our source says, “Though he lives in Jalsa currently, Prateeksha has a special place in the Big B’s heart. Even today, he drops in here every morning after his walk. He has a special room here — in memory of his parents, Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. It is almost like a place of prayer and one or the other family member comes here to spend a few hours each day.’’
Inconspicuous Ammu
Bang next to Jalsa, Ammu is the most inconspicuous of the Bachchan abodes. Sheltered by trees, the compound wall is low. Since the ground floor is leased out to a global bank, hardly anyone looks at the rest of the edifice. However, it is said that above the bank is where Abhishek, Aishwarya, and Aaradhya spend time.
Jalsa: The current residence
Yes, this is the place outside which huge crowds throng each Sunday. At 5 pm, the living legend steps out to wave and do a namaste to the countless fans who assemble here from across the world.
The place is diagonally opposite the J W Marriott Hotel and it is said that at 5 am, Bachchan often crosses the street to use the hotel’s gymnasium.
Jalsa was originally called Mansa. However, a vaastu expert, apparently, asked the B family to change it to Jalsa.
This is the place Amitabh Bachchan got in the early ’80s; around the time he did Satte Pe Satta (1982) from the producer of the film N C Sippy. The cost of the bungalow was reportedly adjusted against his fees for the film.
Jalsa was home to Ajitabh Bachchan for a while
Jalsa was also residence to Ajitabh Bachchan, his wife Ramola, and their three daughters for a short while. At this time, Amitabh and family were still living in Prateeksha. However, after a while, Ajitabh left because he found the place “unsuitable.’’ In fact, Amitabh is said to have sold off this place for a certain price. But when Jaya, who was very attached to Jalsa, asked her husband to get the place back, AB Sr apparently paid the builder double the price and got it back for his missus.
The brand new Mansa
Exactly behind Jalsa is Mansa. This is the latest acquisition of the Bachchans. The place originally belonged to a film financier. And when Mr B evinced an interest in the plot, the financier was ready to sell it to the legend. The deal was brokered by a yesteryear filmmaker’s son (who also resides in Juhu).
The lawns of Mansa are where the Bachchans host the guests for their Diwali and Holi parties. On other days, this is Aaradhya’s playground.
Janak, where the junta goes to meet the Bachchans
Janak is the official Bachchan office. This place is separated from the Bachchan official residences by JVPD’s Road No. 11. It is said that when the Big B wants to get to work, he just walks across from Jalsa to Janak via Mansa. Yup, that entire stretch provides him complete privacy. Janak is where the Bachchan staff sits. This is also the place where the media interactions with the family happen.
Two of the upper floors at Janak are private spaces earmarked for the Piku actor. He likes listening to music here. He also has his favourite musical instrument, the piano, occupying a place of pride at Janak. If you are lucky, you can hear the strains of the piano being played very proficiently by the legend. Of course, if you compliment him, he will shrug it off, saying, “Oh, you flatter me! I’m just about learning to play.”
