Marking his first multilingual project, Ajay Devgn's football drama Maidaan to release in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, besides Hindi
Upala KBR (MID-DAY; November 12, 2019)
Ajay Devgn's magnum opus Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior marks his 100th film in the industry. As he celebrates the milestone, it is only fitting that the actor's future offerings will be bigger. mid-day has it that his next, Maidaan, is being developed as a multi- lingual release, a first for the superstar. The biopic on Syed Abdul Rahim — who served as the coach and manager of the Indian football team from 1950 to 1963 and guided the team to victory at the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962 — will have a simultaneous release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.A trade source reveals, "The film is currently being shot in Lucknow. Through Maidaan, director Amit Ravindernath Sharma wants to familiarise the audience with the legendary coach who had heralded the golden years of Indian football. The makers were keen that the story of Syed Abdul Rahim's immense contribution to Indian football reach as many people as possible. Hence, they decided to also release it in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam, thus tapping the South audience. While Ajay will dub for the Hindi version, the South versions will most likely be recorded by dubbing artistes. The makers are also toying with the idea of roping in celebrated South actors to lend their voice to Ajay's character."
Akash Chawla, who is producing the sports drama with Boney Kapoor and Arunava Joy Sengupta, confirms the development, adding that the universal appeal of the story triggered the decision. "Syed Abdul Rahim hailed from Hyderabad and was one of the most extraordinary coaches who took Indian football to peaks unknown to us, where India was known then as the Brazil of Asia. We always knew that this subject lends itself across languages. Now that we have seen how the film is shaping up during the shoot, we are confident that this is the way to go."

Prosenjit Chatterjee to adapt Pancham da's recently published biography, R D Burman: The Prince Of Music by Khagesh Dev Burman, for screen
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; May 7, 2019)
Even today when music directors have the onus of delivering a chartbuster, they don't look beyond R D Burman's creations - the latest example being The Jawani Song from Student Of The Year 2.It comes as no surprise then that Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee has decided to back a biopic on the late Pancham da, who continues to influence Bollywood music. In collaboration with Akash Chawla and Arunava Joy Sengupta of Fresh Lime Films, the superstar has acquired the rights of the biography, R D Burman: The Prince Of Music by Khagesh Dev Burman, for an on-screen adaptation.
Published in 2015, the book not only explores how Burman played a significant role in introducing Hindi cinema to Western style of music, but also highlights many unknown aspects of his personal life, including his equation with musician-father S D Burman. A source reveals, "It's in the early stage of development, with the makers torn between developing it as a film or a web series. The project is likely to roll only by next year."
When mid-day reached out to Prosenjit, he confirmed the development. "For me, the music of Indian film industry is synonymous with R D Burman. When I directed my first Bengali movie [Purushottam, 1992], I was surprised when he agreed to compose music and also sing a song for it. " He added that a chance reading of the biography led to the idea of the film. "It is high time we paid tribute to the God of the music industry."
The producer duo, who has previously backed Karenjit Kaur, the Sunny Leone biopic, added, "We are happy to adapt this book that will bring the legend's journey to life."

by Zee Studios and Eyecandy Films, the film dwells on nuanced human

numerous locations in India with Indian actors.
Says Majid, “Filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, whose work I adore, have represented India's culture, rich heritage and the lives of common people to a global audience. These visions and images have stayed in my mind for years and cajoled me to make a film in India. Finally, I'm in Mumbai with a lovely team to narrate a story woven around the lives of common people.“
Akash Chawla, Business Head, Zee Studios, adds, “It's our pleasure to associate with a global icon like Majid Majidi. Over the years, he has narrated stories with authenticity and honesty that Zee also aligns itself with while serving content to its audience globally. This film, his first venture in the country, celebrates an India unseen by the world with a heartwarming story.“

Mirror (August 18) was the
first to report that acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi was
in Mumbai last August to prep for his next, a heart-warming
brother-sister story. The news fuelled speculations that Neelima Azeem
and Rajesh Khattar's son and Shahid Kapoor's step brother, Ishaan
Khatter, has been approached for the film amidst reports that the
youngster was poised to debut with either Karan Johar's Student of The
Year 2 or the Hindi remake of Nagraj Manjule's Sairat. Mirror has now
learnt that Ishaan has finally been zeroed down to play the brother's
part in the international film and will start shooting from today in
South Mumbai.
Initially rumoured to be titled Floating Gardens, the project is called
Beyond the Clouds.
“He is a superb actor, was amazing in his look test and suits the character Mr Majidi was looking for. Ishaan will play someone deeply connected to the ground and to the city,“ confirms Shareen Mantri Kedia who is producing the film. The film will be shot across Mumbai and in Jaipur. The acclaimed Iranian writer-producer-director known for films like Baran, The Song of Sparrows, Muhammad: The Messenger of God and the Oscar-nominated Children of Heaven, had met the casting director, Honey Trehan, during his August trip. Honey was subsequently given the task of scouting for at least eight-10 actors from across India to play principal characters in the human-drama.
Meanwhile, it had emerged that Deepika Padukone had done a look test for the female lead after pictures of her in a de-glam avatar with Majidi surfaced last year. While an actress is yet to be locked for said part, Ishaan will roll with the film today.

BOMBAY TIMES (September 15, 2016)
The movie will go on floors this October and is slated for an early 2017 release. Irrfan says, “I loved the script for its innocence and fun quotient. I also liked the breezy storytelling.“
Akash Chawla, Business Head of Zee Studios, adds, “We are focussed on good content and credible partners. For this film, we have a world-class performer Irrfan in a never-seen-before avatar.“ Arjun N Kapoor of Kriarj Entertainment adds, “Our focus remains on cinema that entertains and at the same time, gives the audience its dose of well-crafted thought-provoking films, even if it remains commercial at the core. We are happy to say that our new movie directed by Tanuja is in the same vein.“
Shelly Chopra’s next to be Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film instead of Siddharth Anand’s film?

Upala KBR (DNA; June 28, 2016)
Siddharth Anand’s untitled next won’t be Sanjay Dutt’s
first film post-jail anymore. The project, due to roll in August has
been indefinitely shelved (‘postponed’ is the official term being used).
Instead, Shelly Chopra’s (Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s sister) Marco Bhau, in
all probability, will now be his first release. Shooting begins in
August.
The producers of the Siddharth Anand film, Essel Vision Productions Limited/Zee Studios and KriArj Entertainment, continue to deny these claims, saying the film has simply been postponed. Our source reasons, “They took too long to finalise the female lead. Athiya Shetty and Kriti Sanon were offered the film, but for various reasons neither option worked out. While the official line is that scripting and production prep is taking time, the fact is there are no heroines for it as all big actresses are booked for this year and the film can’t roll without one.”
The producers have an excellent relationship with Dutt and are keen to start another project with another director in January 2017 now. Arjun N Kapoor from KriArj maintains, “A film of this level and genre needs planning and preparation of the highest level before the first day of shoot, to achieve the world standards that we want for this film.”
Akash Chawla from Zee says, “A mutual decision has been taken by everyone including Mr Dutt, the director and the producers, that since the action prep is going to need a lot of time, it is prudent to shift the film to next year.”

Nittin Keni, CEO of the studio, says, “Sairat has achieved a feat that will be remembered in the history of Indian cinema. We're excited to partner with Rockline Entertainment to remake it.“ Akash Chawla, Business Head of the studio, adds, “It has a universal story and the potential to make an impact across languages. We believe the film caters to the realities of South India as well, so we will remake it in Telugu and Kannada, followed by Tamil and Malayalam.“
Rockline Venkatesh, actor-producer and owner of the entertainment company that is co-producing Sairat in southern languages, says, “It is a beautiful movie that touches your heart. I am glad that we have got an opportunity to remake it. This is our first venture with the studio and we are looking forward to a strong relationship with them.“
Nana Patekar adds a dash of spice to Prakash Raj's Tadka

BOMBAY TIMES (May 3, 2016)
The word 'tadka' conjures up
images of sizzling hot and tasty food. National Award-winning actor
Prakash Raj, who has over 300 films to his credit, is set to serve the
audience a 'delicious' cinematic offering with Tadka, which also marks
his directorial debut in Hindi cinema.
The film, a remake of Prakash's Tamil hit, Un Samayal Arayil (2014), has an interesting cast comprising Nana Patekar, Shriya Saran, Ali Fazal and Taapsee Pannu. The actor-filmmaker has also tasted success with Oggarane and Ulavacharu Biryani, the Kannada and Telugu versions respectively. The subjects of all the four films are inspired by the 2011 Malayalam hit Salt N Pepper, the rights of which were acquired by him.
While Nana essays Prakash's role and pairs up with Shriya, Ali and Taapsee play the younger couple in this unique tale of love that brews between a middle-aged duo over their passion for cooking. The quirky and colourful comedy will be shot in Goa.
Nittin Keni and Akash Chawla of Zee Studios, which is producing the venture in association with Prakash, say, “The subject is extremely gripping and will appeal to the audience of all age groups. The cast, led by our favourite Nana Patekar, will only take it a notch higher.“
Sameer Dixit and Jatish Varma of Movie Makers Inc, who are also jointly producing the project, add, “We are proud to be associated with such content-driven cinema. This is a never-seen-before combination of Nana and Prakash Raj. And with such a unique cast, the audience is sure to enjoy this light-hearted entertainer.“
Looking at the makers' mettle and the interesting line-up of actors, Tadka, with the tag line - Love Is Cooking - promises to be a dish to look forward to.

Anand film. Like the director's previous outings, this one too,
traverses multiple cities across the world and promises to be a visual

Akshay Kumar begins Rustom with a strong ensemble cast

BOMBAY TIMES (January 25, 2016)
The New Year has begun with a
bang for KriArj Entertainment (founded by Virendra Arora and Arjun N
Kapoor), Friday Filmworks (Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia's production
house) and media conglomerate Zee Studios. Their first joint
collaboration, the Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom, went on the floors at
the start of the year. Directed by debutant Tinu Suresh Desai and
written by Vipul Rawal, the film inspired from real-life incidents and
set in the late '50s, also features Ileana D'Çruz opposite Akshay and
Esha Gupta essaying a grey role. The movie also features Sachin
Khedekar, Pavan Malhotra, Kumud Mishra, Parmeet Sethi, Sharad Kelkar,
Kanwaljit Singh and Brijendra Kala adding further depth to this strong
ensemble cast.
Nittin Keni and Akash Chawla of Zee Studios say, “In line with our vision of bringing great content and great stories with a strong and stellar cast, Rustom fits the bill perfectly. With the film being collaborated with fantastic creative and technical crew and the star cast being led by Akshay, we fully believe that the audiences will enjoy this thoroughly.“
Talking about their actors, Pandey adds, “I am a firm believer in strong ensemble casts as good storytelling can only be effective through strong overall performances - right down from the main lead to the smaller characters. Akshay to me, as I have often stated, is far more than a star and brings a strong commercial value to the project. He is one of the finest actors we have. Complement this with really strong performers in Ileana and Esha and the rest of the cast - and we have a dream team.“
The collaboration of two production houses and a corporate studio with Akshay is exactly a set-up that Virendra Arora had wanted to achieve for their company's foray into this industry. Arjun adds, “This is the momentous start that was being meticulously worked towards for our company. With Rustom as our first offering, the audiences will get a taste of what they can expect from us as filmmakers. Yes, we do know these are initial days but then as most people would agree that the foundation is more important than anything else.“

Behind the scenes trivia about Jazbaa

BOMBAY TIMES (October 8, 2015)
Sanjay Gupta's upcoming
thriller Jazbaa boasts of a stellar cast. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
and Irrfan are playing the lead roles, Shabana Azmi, Atul Kulkarni and
Chandan Roy Sanyal will be seen playing pivotal characters as
well. Here's a lowdown on the film's USP and what went into its making.
TRIVIA
Photography
Jazbaa has been fabulously shot across different locations in Mumbai. Sameer Arya, the film's DOP, has beautifully captured the emerging skyline of the city like never before. Even the gritty locations in Mumbai have been shot aesthetically, making the film a treat to watch.
Dialogues
In Irrfan's words, the film's 'dhamakedaar seetimaar dialogues' are bound to entertain the audience. It was one of the prime reasons that attracted the actor towards the project.
Aishwarya's prep-work
Aishwarya did a lot of preparation to portray a lawyer in the film. She met lawyers and even went through various court case clippings to get the nuances of her character right. However, everything was not rehearsed. During a particular scene with dogs, where she was scared, her natural expressions were captured to add to the scene's authenticity.
Irrfan's perseverance:
Irrfan especially flew down from Lithuania for two days just to dub for the film so that it stayed on track for release.
During a scene with Aishwarya, Irrfan, even after delivering a perfect take, requested Sanjay to do few more takes as he wanted to provide variation in the performance. At the end, the director was left spoilt for choices as all the takes were brilliant.
SPECIAL EFFECTS
There are around 800 VFX shots in the action thriller.

PRODUCERS' TAKE ON THE FILM
Nittin Keni, CEO, Zee Studios
A
unified effort, what symbolises this film is the professionalism of its
star cast. It is extremely difficult to maintain the balance between a
hard day's shoot and take care of a young child at the same time, the
way Aishwarya did; or Irrfan's generous gesture of flying down all the
way from Lithuania to dub for the film. We are confident that this sheer hard
work and positive team spirit will transpire on celluloid. We are
delighted to bring Jazbaa to the audiences of over 40 countries
simultaneously.
Akash Chawla, Business Head, Zee Studios
Every individual worked relentlessly to achieve the best in Jazbaa. It's an edgy thriller, an edgy thriller, which has been beautifully shot across the city of Mumbai. It will leave viewers spellbound.
Sachiin Joshi, Vice Chairman, Viiking Media and Entertainment
It's been an exhilarating and great journey being associated with Jazbaa. Fans and audiences would be in for a treat with powerhouse talents like Shabana Azmi, Atul Kulkarni, Irrfan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, not to forget the music and Sanjay Gupta's direction.
Sanjay Gupta, White Feather Films
Shooting Jazbaa was like fighting a battle every day as we wrapped up the whole film in 51 days. Sameer, the DOP, literally went to locations at 5 am to get it ready to film by 9 am. We had no luxury of taking it easy or relaxing in the vanity van. It was a hands-on job.

Jazbaa to release in 50 screens in Pakistan
7:53 AM
Posted by Fenil Seta
Joginder Tuteja (DNA; October 6, 2015)
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan-starrer Jazbaa
will see a wide release in Pakistan this Friday. Quite unlike the recent
films that had it tough — Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan initially
faced resistance, but later received support while Saif Ali Khan’s
Phantom never made it there and neither did Madhur Bhandarkar’s Calendar
Girls.
Plain business
“In fact, the release is turning out to be a really planned one in Pakistan,” informs our source, “From day one, the makers of Jazbaa (Zee Studios) were clear that Pakistan was a territory they had to explore. It doesn’t have anything to warrant any kind of argument, resistance or protest against it. It is a dramatic thriller and there is no controversial content whatsoever in there, that would have been influenced by the political relationship between the two countries. It is a pure and simple business decision for distributors in Pakistan and producers in India. Period.”
Strategic opening
No wonder, Jang Group, one of Pakistan’s largest media conglomerates, has acquired the film. “It can’t get bigger than that,” says Akash Chawla of Zee Studios after inking the deal, “It is a huge strategic tie-up that we have hit upon. We are seeing one of the largest ever Bollywood releases in Pakistan.” With over 50 screens already reserved for the Sanjay Gupta starrer, this Friday is expected to be huge for Jazbaa.
Star power
“Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has a huge fan following in Pakistan and with Jazbaa bringing her back in action, it was quite rudimentary to have her arrival announced in style. As for Irrfan, he is a global star today. When other countries are accepting him with open arms, there was no reason why Pakistan won’t do the same,” a trade observer adds.
Meanwhile, the Middle East too has raised such a huge demand for the film that an Arabic version of Jazbaa would have a day-and-date release in these territories as well.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is not just another chick. She loved doing action scenes-Sanjay Gupta

BOMBAY TIMES (October 5, 2015)
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,
Irrfan, Shabana Azmi, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Atul Kulkarni and Jackie
Shroff don't stand apart just individually in Jazbaa, but have also
worked closely to bring out the best in each other in this cool,
fast-paced thriller.
Aishwarya plays an advocate while Irrfan essays the role of a tough cop. There are action and courtroom scenes that pack a punch. The actors ensured that these scenes create a wow moment.
In the action scenes, Irrfan shared tips from his previous experience with Aishwarya to bring out the required 'race-against-time' grit. For a car chase, the internationally-renowned actor volunteered to teach her how to drive rashly for the camera and ensure that neither she nor the crew, canning the scenes, were hurt. The on-screen chemistry between Aishwarya and Shabana or Irrfan and Shabana are a point of discussion because of the scenes' intensity and novelty, as all of them have acted together for the first time.
Akash Chawla, Zee Studios Business Head, says, “We decided to produce this film because it brings together such a stellar cast and a highly accomplished technical crew like Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty, cinematographer Sameer Arya and director Sanjay Gupta. We've tried to put together a quality product for an audience that is keenly awaiting Jazbaa.“
Sanjay says, “It's exciting to have a combination of powerhouse talent like Shabanaji, Aishwarya, Irrfan, Jackie, Atul and Chandan, especially when they come together with hard-hitting performances. Working with veteran actress and social activist Shabanaji is a milestone in my career. I've worked with male actors like Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham and others, but Aishwarya is not just another chick. She loved doing action scenes and has excelled in them. As for Irrfan, you give him a scene and he will surprise you with his own take and a performance that you can't imagine.“

Jazbaa, produced by Zee Studios, Viiking Media & Entertainment and White Feather Films, releases October 9.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will unveil the first look of her comeback film, Jazbaa, at the Cannes Film Festival at a closed door United Nations panel discussion on May 16, followed by a media event on May 19.
Besides Aishwarya, the elite panel includes Oscar nominated actress Salma Hayek, Adele Exarchopoulos, the Palm d'Or winning star of Blue Is The Warmest Color and producers of the upcoming film Carol, Christine Vachone and Elizabeth Kushel. The group will talk about gender equality and the role of women in media.
The film's trailer will be showcased at the event in the presence of producer, Essel Vision business head Akash Chawla, and writer, co-producer-director Sanjay Gupta. When contacted, Akash told Mirror, "Most films define the man as the only hero but in this case all three actors, Aishwarya, Shabana Azmi and Irrfan Khan, have equally significant roles in taking the story forward. And since the trio have a prominent international presence, an event at Cannes, which is the most prestigious film fest, was a welcome opportunity to get the international media together under one roof."
The film opens on October 9 and Akash points out that Zee Entertainment, which has a strong US presence, is planning a widespread US and global release. "The Cannes market is a great place to connect with international distributors," he asserts.
Aishwarya will be returning to the big screen five years after Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish with the courtroom drama in which she plays a successful lawyer who has a week to win the most important case of her life.

Himesh Reshammiya. The actor-composer-producer will also double up as
the lead for the film titled Heeriye, jointly produced by his company HR

We'll soon introduce the format for which we'll use the digital assets of the company to implement this hunt and create an easily accessible platform to discover young talent.“
Being helmed by film critic-turned-director, Vishal Mishra, the film features Tigmanshu Dhulia in a pivotal role. The movie also promises soulful and melodious music. The debutant director enthuses, “It's a pleasure to have one of the biggest media houses of India backing my maiden directorial venture. It's a unique love story woven in the current social scenario.“
Heeriye is scheduled to go on floors this winter.
