Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who lost her dad Krishnaraj Rai earlier this year, is doing something special to remember him on his birthday today. Says a source close to the actress, “Aishwarya has decided to celebrate her father’s birthday in a special way by sponsoring surgeries for 100 children born with cleft lips and palates through the NGO, Smile Train India and announce the day as ‘Day of Smiles’.”

As the NGO’s goodwill ambassador, she has been supporting the international cleft charity for the past nine years, and through The Aishwarya Rai Foundation, her father had supported cleft lip and palate surgeries for 100 children in 2014.

The source adds, “She will be visiting a suburban hospital in Mumbai with her mother Vrinda Rai and her daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan, to meet cleft-lip patients and motivate the children to pursue their dreams.”

Parents Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan threw a princess theme party to ring in Aaradhya's fifth birthday on Sunday evening while grandpa Amitabh Bachchan gushed about the “most beautiful granddaughter in the whole wide world“ in a blog post on the eve of Baby B's big day. On the evening itself, he was appropriately pink in a Nehru jacket as he stood at the gate of his bungalow Pratiksha welcoming guests from 5pm.

Sonali Bendre was spotted with hubby Goldie Behl and son Ranveer, Kiran Rao came with son Azad and Sanjay Gupta turned up with his daughter, Dalai, whose gift was bigger than her. Sanjay Dutt's twins Shahran and Iqra were accompanied by mamma Manyata and Neelam strolled in with daughter Ahana. Akshay Kumar was busy with the launch of 2.0 but his better half, Twinkle, took their daughter Nitara to the party. Also present were Kunal Kapoor and wife Naina Bachchan.

There were photo-sessions galore on a large white chariot and the buffet was laid outdoors. There were three cakes one with a princess in a silver tiara wearing Aaradhya's face, another pink and blue cake one for the b'day girl and the third a surprise for nana Krishnaraj who had just brought in his own birthday with the words, “Happy Birthday Ajja“ on it.

“The guest list took a week to be finalised after which invites were sent out and return gifts purchased according to the ages of the kids. Aishwarya personally picked out the bean bags and chocolates as return gifts,“ reveals a source.

Like her last birthday, Aishwarya and Abhishek’s daughter Aaradhya will celebrate her fifth birthday (November 16) with a pink princess theme, but not today. This time, she will be celebrating it along with her nana, Ash’s father, who celebrates his birthday on November 20.

Says a source, “Ash is busy planning Aaradhya’s birthday party, which will be celebrated on November 20, as it’s her father Krishnaraj Rai’s birthday that day. The Rais and the Bachchans along with a host of B-Town celebs and their wives will be seen at Prateeksha joining in the double celebration. Aaradhya is thrilled to celebrate it with her nana this time and has been participating in the decorations herself. Krishnaraj’s favorite dishes have been included on the menu.”

The party is being held on the weekend so that kids can chill, as on weekdays they have school so gets difficult for them to stay on late. “Aaradhya wants a princess theme so life-size cutouts will be there all over and everyone is expected to dress in pink as that’s Aaradhya’s favourite colour. Last year, everything was decorated in pink with a pink cake in the shape of a castle.”

November is a month of celebrations in the Bachchan household. Along with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s (on November 1) and daughter Aaradhya’s (on Nov 16) birthdays, there’s also Diwali. “You’re forgetting my father’s birthday (Nov 20). We celebrate the entire month”, she laughs.

While she was in London shooting for Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil on her birthday, it was still a family celebration with Aaradhya and mother accompanying her to the shoot while husband Abhishek flew in to be with her. “It was a warm wonderful birthday. My husband and my producer Karan made sure of that,” says Ash.

She returns next week in time for the festival of lights. “Diwali has to be at home, no matter what. The family has to be together for that occasion. Or at least, we try to be. But all of us have our own crazy schedules. Sometimes it becomes impossible to fulfil family obligations. But we try our best,” she says.
