Working with Kumar in Khel Khel Mein, Aditya Seal on how his father took him to Bangkok to learn martial arts
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; July 7, 2024)
There is a lot on Aditya Seal’s plate—from Hardik Gajjar’s Amar Prem to the Kajol-starrer Maharagni: Queen Of Queens. But nothing excites the actor more than sharing screen space with Akshay Kumar in the Mudassar Aziz-directed film Khel Khel Mein. Working on the comedy drama, especially with Kumar, was “an incredible experience,” says the actor, who is known for his performances in Tum Bin 2 (2016) and Student Of The Year 2 (2019).
Opening up on his experience, Seal says, “Akshay is not just a superstar but an industry stalwart whose work I have admired for years. His filmography, from romance and biopics to drama, sports, and action, is unparalleled. He has dabbled in almost every genre with remarkable ease and success.”
Seal reveals that while working with his idol has been wonderful, his father is a bigger admirer of the actor.
“My father has been a fan of Akshay’s action. To let me walk in Akshay’s footsteps, my father took me to Bangkok when I was young to stay and learn martial arts. Working with him now [feels like] a full-circle moment.”

In an exclusive chat with BT, Aditya Seal and Anushka Ranjan talk about their upcoming wedding and finding the perfect partner in each other
Tanvi Trivedi (BOMBAY TIMES; November 19, 2021)
Actor-couple Aditya Seal and Anushka Ranjan are all set to walk down the aisle on November 21. The couple plans to have an intimate three-day wedding, which will include sangeet, mehndi and the wedding ceremonies. They were in a relationship for the last four years before Aditya proposed to Anushka in Paris in October 2019. In a chat with BT, they talk about what makes their bond so special and the excitement around their upcoming shaadi. Excerpts:
‘INITIALLY, I FELT SHE WAS TOO COOL FOR ME’
The Student Of The Year 2 actor initially felt that Anushka was way out of his league. He says, “We connected very well in the first meeting itself, but I was hesitant to ask her out. I felt she was too cool for me.”
Aditya says, “Gradually, I realised that Anushka is a very evolved lady and has a deeper understanding of situations and people than I do. She can get people to open up easily, and I find that ability very heartwarming.”
‘I HAVE NEVER LOVED SO DEEPLY’
Talking about the phase when they were getting to know each other, Anushka shares, “Aditya and I have had different upbringings and while my family is flamboyant, his family is simple and soft-spoken. But when we started meeting regularly, he realised that we connected as people and genuinely liked each other. I have immense respect for Aditya because deep down in my heart, I realise that I have never loved so deeply.”
‘THE FEELING OF GETTING MARRIED HASN’T SUNK IN YET’
The couple is all set to tie the knot in a few days. Aditya says, “It feels like I will move in with my girlfriend after a few days and embark on a new adventure. We wanted to get married sooner, but we waited for the pandemic to get over. I used to live in Bandra earlier, but after my father passed away in the pandemic, I found an apartment in Anushka’s building complex, so my mother and I will be close to Anushka’s parents in Andheri.”
Anushka adds, “I have never wanted a big fat wedding. Also, I am not someone who will fuss over her lehenga or take days to decide on songs for my sangeet! I come from a family where my parents had never made it mandatory to get married at a certain age. It was all about work and doing what I like. The feeling of becoming a wife hasn’t sunk in yet, but I am happy that I will be with someone I have loved and known for a long time now and everyone around me is happy, too. That’s ideal.” Quoting a line from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Aditya says, “Pyaar dosti hai... Anushka and I have been great friends. We share almost everything, and there is a great level of communication.”
Talking about her family’s fondness for Aditya, Anushka says, “My mother (Anu Ranjan) feels that Aditya is her son and can’t stop talking about him, while my father (Shashi Ranjan) is still portraying that since he is the girl’s father, he will take longer to love the son-inlaw. It is quite a happy time when we all get together, and we can talk about anything in front of my parents or his mother.”
On a parting note, Aditya says, “This is the first good event happening in my family after I lost my father and we are looking forward to this new chapter in our lives.”
I will talk about my marriage when the time is right-Anushka Ranjan

The actress on rumours of her wedding with Aditya Seal on November 21
Neha Maheshwri (BOMBAY TIMES; October 17, 2021)
According to buzz, Anushka Ranjan is all set to tie the knot with Aditya Seal on November 21. Though she has been pretty open about her relationship with the Student Of The Year 2 actor, she has decided to stay tight-lipped about their wedding plans. She says, “I am superstitious about talking about my marriage at the time. I will talk about it when the time is right. Besides, there is nothing concrete as of now.”
The two have been regularly sharing glimpses of their love life on their social media pages. She says, “When it comes to relationships, I just find it very disrespectful not to acknowledge friends and partners. These are the relationships we choose. So, why would you want to hide something that you consciously decided to be a part of ? If you are not sure, well then that’s a different story. But then, you never know what might happen in a relationship. A 50-year-old wedding can come to an end, and an engagement of five years can go kaput… anything can happen. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t give it due respect. Aditya and I are like best buddies.”
Anushka says, “We talk about silly stuff and crack jokes all day. Most people say that we look like best friends, and that is the most important thing for me in a relationship… where you can just sit for hours, play board games, fight and also move on, without the thought of walking out occurring. It’s a normal, regular relationship between two regular people.”
How does she define normal though? “For me, normal is what my school life and my friends were. And that is what I had first noticed about him. He is a simple and down-to-earth person, which is so rare in this glamour world. When you are in a space like that, you start appreciating normalcy so much more. His mother and sister are lovely. He comes from a beautiful, loving family. That’s what I think worked for us,” she reveals.
Aditya’s father succumbed to COVID-19 in September 2020. During the tough phase, Anushka was by his side like a rock. She says, “It will be challenging for anybody because it’s something you don’t really prepare yourself for — the passing away of a parent. When it happened, it was difficult, but he was really strong through it all, and so was his mom. That made it easier for us to manage the situation.”
On the work front, the actress finished shooting for a web series. She made her Bollywood debut with Wedding Pullav (2015). Unfortunately, it failed to set the cash registers ringing. Ask her if she has assessed what went wrong, and she replies, “There have been times when a perfect film with a perfect script and a perfect cast fails to perform. And then there are short films unheard of that give birth to overnight stars! I believe that it wasn’t the right timing for me and I don’t want to get too bogged down with it. The good thing I took away from that experience was that people who watched it, especially senior people in the industry, called me to say that I did a good job. That appreciation kept me going. Yes, it’s a struggle story, but I think it’s been fun and enriching as well.”
She further adds, “My career path may have been riddled with obstacles, but there’s so much I am thankful for — my family, my friends, my support system. When you are grateful for so much, it will be selfish to cry and complain about one thing that probably hasn’t worked out perfectly. Yes, the film didn’t make me a star, but I had the chance to see the world, meet new people, focus on my acting and work on myself.”
When I tested COVID positive, I didn’t know how to break this news to my mother-Aditya Seal

The actor was worried about his mother’s reaction as his father had succumbed to the virus last year
Onkar Kulkarni (BOMBAY TIMES; April 16, 2021)
Aditya Seal is quite relieved that he has finally recovered and tested negative for COVID-19. The Student Of The Year 2 actor, who had tested positive last month, was worried about breaking the news to his mother considering his father succumbed to the virus last year. Aditya, who will next be seen in choreographer Bosco Martis’ directorial debut, Rocket Gang, talks to BT about battling the virus, how his girlfriend Anushka Ranjan helped him through the phase and his thoughts on taking the relationship to the next level. Read on…
You tested positive for COVID-19 last month and had quarantined at home. Tell us about that phase.
On the night of my birthday (March 22), when I got together with a few of my friends, I started feeling a little uneasy, so I left the party early. The next day, I had a massive headache, and I got myself tested. The results were negative. A couple of days later, I got tested again after a co-actor on the sets of Rocket Gang tested positive. While the results were awaited, I began with my digital project. I was getting ready in the vanity van and was about to start the shoot when the results arrived, stating I was COVID positive. I rushed home and quarantined myself.
How did your mother take this news, considering your father succumbed to COVID-19 last year?
When I tested positive, I immediately called up my sister, as I didn’t know how to break this news to my mom. When my sister informed my mother, she panicked and was in tears. I spoke to my mother over the phone and assured her that I was feeling absolutely fine. While I was locked in one of the rooms of our house, my mom took good care of me. I felt blessed. For those 14 days, I missed being around her, so after testing negative, the first thing I did was give her a big hug.
Recently, you moved into the same apartment complex as your girlfriend, was that of help to your mother while you were quarantined?
This year, we sold off our home in Bandra and moved into a new house, which is in the same building where Anushka lives with her family. Given that my work involves a lot of travelling, I didn’t want my mom to be alone. My mom gets along with Anushka’s family, so moving to this house has worked out very well. When I was under quarantine, I was happy that my mom had Anushka and her mother around. Through my quarantine phase, Anushka and I were constantly in touch with each other through phone calls.
You met Anushka about three years ago, what made the two of you click?
Anushka and I are very different from each other. She has a much stronger personality than I do. Her thought process is clearer, and she is an exceptionally good speaker. We are very different in a lot of ways, but together, we are right for each other. We met three-and-a-half years ago. I was invited to an event hosted by her family, and that’s where I met her for the first time. We clicked pretty well that day and chatted a lot, even after the event was over. Then we started hanging out together. It took a while for us to get into a relationship, but eventually, it happened.
Is marriage on the cards?
We have a lot to do before we think about settling down. There is a lot to achieve and prove. I don’t want to get married at a time when I am not completely satisfied with where I am in terms of my career. Yes, it’s shaping up well, but if I want to enter that phase of my life, I would want to do it when I am more comfortable than rush into it.
People have seen 2 minutes of a 2-hour long Indoo Ki Jawani and they've judged the entire film-Aditya Seal

Aditya Seal responds after netizens attack Indoo Ki Jawani online for depicting 'romance between Indo-Pak characters'
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; December 5, 2020)
When the makers of Indoo Ki Jawani saw Aditya Seal in Student Of The Year 2 (2019), they knew they had found their hero. But they worried whether an actor, who played such a glamorous part in SOTY 2, would fit into their film. "This is a much rustic character," begins Seal, who stars opposite Kiara Advani in the comedy. "Director Abir (Sengupta) had his vision and knew exactly what he wanted. It was the happiest set I have ever been on. It's so integral to setting the tone in a comedy. The film isn't slapstick but is more of a comedy of errors. It contributes towards cinema if the humour is beyond baseless. Cinema should have depth and a social slant. I am all for entertainment but movies should give people something to think about."
The trailer left everyone wondering whether Seal plays a Pakistani character. "That's a well-guarded secret," he laughs. Unfortunately though, soon after the promo dropped, a section of netizens attacked the film, claiming that it highlighted a Pakistani man-Indian woman romance. "Till the time one hasn't watched the film, what are they commenting about really? People have seen 2 minutes of a 2-hour long film and they've judged the entire film. This is the stereotype that we are attempting to break with the film. The core of the movie is about how we shouldn't judge a book by its cover. To play Samar, I had to defeat my own conditioning and stop judging the world on mere appearances. Everybody has been through a lot this year. When I saw the movie's trailer, I found it refreshing. I have myself been through a lot this year and the film's glimpses have made me smile, given me hope. I wish people could start to lighten up a little. I have a problem when people pass judgements just because they have a mouthpiece given."
The actor has had a rough year, having lost his father to Coronavirus in September. Taking a cue from the words of Meghan Markle, we ask him the one question that we were evading: Is he okay? "No, I am not okay. I don't know how I am coping. Honestly, now that I reflect upon the last few months, I don't know how we got by that. My heart kept saying that I should pause. I wanted to stop and process my grief. But it felt like I don't have the option to. I grew up before I wanted to. There are a lot of responsibilities on my head so I have to keep going. Once my worries are over, will the enormity of what has happened sink in."

Coping with my father’s death was difficult, but he would’ve wanted me to get back to work-Aditya Seal

The actor, whose father succumbed to COVID-19 recently, talks about how he dealt with the sudden loss
Rachana Dubey (BOMBAY TIMES; November 29, 2020)
Actor Aditya Seal, who was seen in Tum Bin 2 (2016) and Student Of The Year 2 (2019), lost his father, Ravi Seal, to Coronavirus recently. A few days later, he dived deep into work to distract himself from the loss he had suffered. After completing the patchwork for a forthcoming film, the actor is busy prepping for choreographer Bosco Martis’ directorial debut Rocket Gang.
“For the first 15 days, it didn’t sink in that I would no longer get to see my father. It took more than a fortnight to come to terms with this loss. My sister and mom were miserable, but I had to hold fort. One night, it suddenly hit me that I will never really see my dad again. That’s when I broke down and would often cry, but only when I would be alone. On the sets, I tried not to think about it. I would never have liked to feel like a grown-up man this way,” says Aditya.
Aditya says that it was his father’s work ethic that inspired him to return to the set soon after the personal loss. He shares, “It was difficult to deal with losing my father suddenly, but I knew that he would have wanted me to get back to work. He started working at 14 and worked till the age of 61. Wherever we are in life, is because he worked hard for it. I hope to be as relentless towards work as he was. I have a lot more responsibility towards my mother and sister now. My mother has been a homemaker all her life. Suddenly, her world has changed. I plan to help her be a little more independent, starting with working on brushing up her driving skills and teaching her net banking. I want her to feel confident about managing these things on her own.”
While on set, Aditya is extremely cautious and ensures that people around him, too, take the pandemic seriously. He says, “My father was doing well, but suddenly his condition worsened in the last three days. Whenever I am on the set, I am a lot more cautious, because I don’t want to put anyone’s health at risk. I carry four sanitisers, two masks, gloves, the works... I ensure that I follow all the precautionary measures. In fact, I didn’t go back home when I was shooting. I stayed elsewhere, so that people at home would be safe.”
