“Bachchon ko paalne mein saara samay nikal gaya. Par ab Tina aur Yash apne kaam mein busy hain aur Govinda apne mein rehte hain toh mere pass bahut samay hai. Ab lagta hai I should work and earn some money,” says Sunita Ahuja, actor Govinda’s wife, who will soon be seen in her daughter, Tina Ahuja’s podcast. In a special shoot with us, Sunita says she’s open to taking on projects.
“Every woman should be independent, they shouldn’t be dependent on their husbands or fathers. I took care of my family, my husband and kids. I was managing Govinda’s work, but he, too, has stopped working for two years. So now, I want to carve a career path. I feel alone, so I want to be busy. Judging a comedy show on TV is something I am looking at,” she says.
Govinda and his family are often in the news for various reasons — including his recent bullet injury, the discord with his nephew, actor-comedian Krushna Abhishek, or the couple making bold statements in media interviews. But Sunita doesn’t “care a damn” about the attention her family gets for the wrong reasons: “Mujhe koi troll kare ya mujh par comment kare, it doesn’t affect me. I will not change myself because of people’s reactions. Main jo hoon, main hoon. Pasand hai toh baat karo mujhse, nahi pasand hai, toh get out!”
Talking about being a star wife, she adds, “Dil par patthar rakhna padta tha kyunki kabhi yahan link-up ke rumours, kabhi wahan. But since he was working non-stop, time hi nahin tha affairs karne ka. Ab woh (Govinda) kaam nahin kar raha hai toh mujhe insecurity hai kahin affair na kar le (laughs).”
On Krushna and Kashmera
“Maine abhi tak Krushna se baat nahin ki hai. Jab Govinda ko goli lagi thi, woh 10 baje ghar aaya tha (when he was recovering at home), par main 9.30 baje so jaati hoon. Toh hum mile hi nahin. Dono ne apologize nahin kiya hai abhi tak, so how can I forgive? Krushna apologized to Govinda on Kapil’s (Sharma, comedian) show, but not to me. Kashmera came to visit Govinda in the hospital but once I came, I didn’t see her around.”
On Uashvardhan’s acting debut
Her son, Yashvardhan Ahuja’s debut film was confirmed recently by co-actor Babil. “I am happy that his debut is with good makers. Yash wohi karega jo uski maa kahegi. I don’t want people to say that he is copying Govinda’s acting or dance moves. People might compare, but I want Yash to be original,” says Sunita.
On Govinda’s career dip
“He always felt that a ‘90s hero should not play second lead, which was a delusion. He could have done more and better work. He did a few films, but refused so many, including several OTT projects, as they were not solo leads. He produced Aa Gaya Hero (2017), which was a flop. Heroes shouldn’t write films for themselves.”
Rajkummar Rao beats Govinda at the box office

Govinda is considered one of the best entertainers in cinema but since many years, he hasn’t had a great run at the ticket window. Even if his films flopped, it managed to have some respectable opening. But with Aa Gaya Hero, he has touched a new low. The veteran actor’s comeback film never seemed exciting and looked extremely dated and unappealing. A very poor opening was always on the cards. But the trade is shocked to see that the film netted just Rs 20 lakhs on the first day. With reports being extremely negative, it will be a challenge for the film to even hit the 1.50 crore mark.
What’s shocking is that a highly unconventional film, Trapped, starring Rajkummar Rao, has opened better than Aa Gaya Hero, a massy film. Trapped earned Rs 25 lakhs on Day 1 and it release in lesser number of screens than Aa Gaya Hero. Moreover, Rajkummar Rao doesn’t primarily enjoy star power since he has done offbeat films mainly. Govinda on the other hand is a star of the masses and not to forget, Aa Gaya Hero too is a type of film that would be enjoyed by the audiences on the whole. Considering these factors, it is astonishing that Aa Gaya Hero had such a disastrous opening!
Trapped also enjoys positive reviews and will surely sustain well at the box office. As for Govinda, it’s high time he gets a reality check with regards to audiences’ tastes.

MIX OF FILMS THIS WEEK BUT NONE SEEM EXCITING
Last week’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania rocked the show and in the 2nd week too, it is all set to have a great run as the new releases don’t seem to be very exciting commercially. My analysis on these films:
AA GAYA HERO: This is the comeback film of Govinda but the buzz is hardly there. It’s been ready since 2014 when it was then called Abhinay Chakra. The film was then rechristened to Aa Gaya Hero to perhaps make it saleable. But it looks very outdated. The release date of the film was changed multiple times. 10 days ago, the trade was not even sure if it will make it on 17th as there were reports that it was not getting a buyer. Govinda is a great entertainer but sadly, this film is going to suffer.
MACHINE: It is directed by Abbas-Mustan and marks the debut of Abbas’s son Mustafa Burmawala. The film also stars Kiara Advani and has a rich look. Story-wise, it seems ordinary and even juvenile. But the makers assure that it has loads of twists Abbas-Mustan style and will make for a great watch. The film consists of the reworked version of Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast that got thumbs down. But it helped spread the awareness about the film. The opening of the film will not be great but it most probably will earn more than Aa Gaya Hero on Day 1.
TRAPPED: It stars Rajkummar Rao as the leading actor. The whole film revolves around him as he gets trapped in a flat in a highrise and how he tries to survive and get out of it. The film generated near unanimous appreciation at the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. The trailer has been loved and there has been a curiosity as to how exactly Rajkummar gets trapped and why is he not able to contact anyone. This is a very niche film but it has loads of entertainment. Hence, the opening might be poor but the word of mouth can ensure it can do better from Day 2 onwards. The costs are limited and hence, the film doesn’t have to earn much to turn out to be a profitable venture.

No takers for Govinda's comeback film; Actor struggles to release Aa Gaya Hero?

Govinda may have been the quintessential Bollywood hero in the '90s, but he is currently struggling to release his next, 'Aa Gaya Hero'. It is learnt the actor, who has been busy promoting his comeback movie, hasn't been able to find a distributor.
'Aa Gaya Hero' was initially scheduled to hit the screens on February 24, but the release date was pushed to March 3. Later, it was rescheduled to March 17. However, even that seems unlikely at the moment. A distributor-exhibitor, on condition on anonymity, reveals that the actor is willing to pay distributors to release the film.
"The movie is a repackaged version of Abhinay Chakra, which was supposed to release in 2015, but was postponed indefinitely. In today's day and age, when Bollywood films have high-octane action sequences and fine VFX, 'Aa Gaya Hero' looks dated. Apart from Govinda's dancing, there's no novelty factor. The promos and songs aren't doing well either. There's no buzz around the film in the trade circuit. With the movie set to run into Abbas-Mustan's 'Machine' and Rajkummar Rao's 'Trapped', the decision to release it on March 17 is questionable," said the distributor-exhibitor.
Govinda remained unavailable for comment.
Govinda goes the restaurant way

The actor lends use of his ‘Hero No 1’ brand identity to chain of restaurants he will partner with and endorse

There was a time when Govinda’s success story and stardom were synonymous with the number one, thanks to the several David Dhawan comedies he acted in. Now, 30 years and 170 films on, the actor is all set to revive his ‘Hero No 1’ brand twice, in an altogether novel way.
As he is all set to resurrect his career with the forthcoming Aa Gaya Hero, he is also expected to partner with and endorse a chain of restaurants in Uttar Pradesh that will bear the name ‘Hero No 1’. The groundwork has already been completed and the chain will be officially launched soon.
The actor recently spoke of his plans from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, “It is really amazing how it all happened. There was this Delhi-based group who were keen on getting into the restaurant business and expressed a keen desire to tie up with me for this venture. It is also a strange coincidence that this chain is being opened around the same time as the release of my film, Aa Gaya Hero. There are some things in your destiny that come back to you after ages when good things start happening all over again. I am quite thrilled with this sequence of events,” he said.

Govinda recently released the first look of his comeback film Aa Gaya Hero on his birthday. The fine-print though also reveals the tagline as File Of Abhinay Chakra. That brought our attention to the fact that there was a film called Abhinay Chakra announced way back in 2013 with the actor as the central protagonist. It only made us wonder if Aa Gaya Hero is nothing but a repackaged version of Abhinay Chakra.
On digging further, we realised that AC, which was said to have been completed in a record 29 days, was supposed to release in August 2014. Later, it was pushed by a couple of months, only to be delayed further. However, there was no progress on that and instead, Govinda was seen in two other films, Happy Ending and Kill/Dil, which are now being termed as his cameos. In 2015, there were talks again of the film, which would feature Govinda in the role of an honest cop who takes on the system, to be released. Again, nothing came out of it.
As a matter of fact, a rough cut promo of the film came online, too, which is clearly a leak since it is more of a few random shots being put together instead of a proper theatrical promo.
While a few websites have these promos blocked, at a couple of sites one can still see them on with the alternate titles as Abhinay Chakra or Aa Gaya Hero. The promo does aim at showing the ‘Hero No. 1’ side of Govinda where he gets into the dancing shoes and then also delivers a few hard hitting 90s style dialogues.
The credentials stay the same as well. Abhinay Chakra was announced with Ashutosh Rana and Murli Sharma as Govinda’s co-actors and the promo features them as well. Now the first-look poster of Aa Gaya Hero has the same names as well. The director too remains the same, Dipankar Senapati, who has been an assistant director on a few Bengali films.
Fortunately for Govinda though, the film is now ready for release and it has actually been a good decision on the part of the team to package it differently as Aa Gaya Hero. As a matter of fact an entirely new promotional campaign has been designed for the film and to facilitate that, Govinda is also getting quite active in the world of social media. The film is supposed to release in early 2017. One wonders if this will do the trick for Govinda.

Govinda discusses Bollywood camps, a career lull, and why he hopes Varun Dhawan does not become “another Govinda”

Senior actor Govinda is set to make another comeback with Aa Gaya Hero, 30 years after he debuted in Bollywood with Ilzaam (1986). A failed stint in politics, and a long lull in cinema have him admit that things aren’t going great for him. And while he has received some support from industry folk, he says philosophically, “If your time is not right, why play the blame game? You have to start all over again.”
Considered one of the most underrated actors, Govinda’s last two films, Kill Dil (2014) and Happy Ending (2014), bombed. “I have reconciled with it. I can only hope things will improve,” he says.
The current state is a surprise because the actor made a successful first comeback in 2007with the hugely popular comedy film, Partner, where the comic timing shared with Salman Khan earned accolades.
There may have been chatter about a sequel to the film, but Govinda says, “I knew I’d never work with Salman again. I don’t think Partner 2 will ever happen.” Broaching a subject that’s tricky, Govinda discusses camps in Bollywood; powerful coteries led by the most influential actors and directors who decide who gets left out in the cold. Although admitting that he knew he wouldn’t survive in Salman’s camp for long, he adds, “At the same time, I am indebted to him for what he did for me.”
In 2014, Govinda was reportedly set to star in a Mahesh Manjrekar film produced by Salman, but the project didn’t take off. Apparently, Chi Chi did not want the role and Salman had taken to social media to coax him. “I don’t want to get into the reasons [behind the shelving]. It’s just that Salman and I have studied the same subject differently. We belong to two different schools of thought. Once Rajinikanth said, ‘Do not do what your heart does not want to’. I believe in it.”
It’s possibly why when Govinda hears that young star Varun Dhawan is being compared to him, he hopes Varun “doesn’t become another Govinda. I had to face a lot of hardships. Today’s youngsters will not understand it. Varun is the son of a filmmaker. He is young, educated. He can carve a niche for himself.”

That calls for a double celebration...
I'm releasing my film and can't take on extra expenses. It's nice to hear the word 'Birthday Boy'. When you see my film, you will start believing that age is just a number. Once, my mother blessed me saying, 'You will take care of my children till they turn 49.' When I told her, 'Tab tak meri umar ho jayegi', she said, 'You will neither feel old or behave like one'. After my film is out, I'd love to hear the same from my fans. Zamana aisa chal raha hai, apna dindora khud peetna padta hai.
You've completed three decades in the industry. How do you look back at your journey?
It was not easy for me to enter films and despite so much groupism deliver hits after hits. When I ventured into politics, I had a hard time there. Making my own films and releasing them is also difficult. There has been no group or support from the beginning. It's always been my mother's blessings, love of the fans and the public that has helped me.
Do you think you got your due?
Not at all. Neither did I get it nor did I work on it. My approach has always been to work so that I can support my family. I never planned my movies. I never selected subjects to win the National Award. I did films that made the masses happy. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice your talent to please the public. When I signed films with big directors, they didn't fare well, but whenever I did projects with zero expectations, they did great business. Somehow, planning my films never suited me. When I decided to make a comeback, I had to cash in on my brand of cinema; I didn't want to disappoint the public. People liked my performances in Kill Dill and Happy Ending, but I was hardly there in them. Sometimes, your effort doesn't reach the audience. I've ensured that my upcoming film will satisfy people who come to see a Govinda film.
What made you choose the film?
The best thing about a subject like this is, there are no expectations to be a typical hero. My character attempts to tell the youth that there is a hero in everyone. Zindagi mein mushkilen aati hai, but if you take the right decision, you are a hero. Life is all about taking the right decisions and acting correctly; don't get trapped in any situation.
You've played a cop earlier, too. What sets this role apart?
All the films I have played a cop in - Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Khuddar, Muqabla and Gambler have been hits. When people were skeptical about the stories I was choosing, I reiterated that this is the right time to make movies like those in the South. If you have noticed, all blockbusters, be it Singham, Dabangg or Rowdy Rathore, have the flavour of South films. My film is also a pucca masala entertainer for everyone, from children to elders.
Any regrets about the choices you have made?
I have no regrets about my career in films, but I regret joining politics. I didn't get a film for 10 years. I planned to leave politics while I was still a part of it, but I completed my term and never looked back.
Does any actor from the current crop remind you of yourself?
I get scared when I get to see three-four Govindas in the industry. Every time a film does well, people say it's a Govinda kind of film, only he is not acting in it.
Coming from a humble background with no filmi connections, you became a name to reckon with. What do you attribute your success to?
I am a struggler when I am working, but I believe that big strugglers turn out to be bigger stars. That's the secret.
What's next after Aa Gaya Hero?
Next is Raju Mind-Blowing. It's about a chaiwala who becomes the greatest personality in the world.
Is your story inspired by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi?
I've never thought like that. I started working on the script long ago, when I had no idea what the future held. It's just that sometimes, your intuition works.
Has your son Yashvardhan shown any inclination towards acting?
He has completed a six-month course in London, but he's taking his own time to work on himself. He has an extremely pleasing personality that draws people to him.
Are you nervous about your upcoming film?
All I want to say is that I have always been a fighter. Once again, it's a fight between my past and myself, and I hope that I win again. I just need the blessings and best wishes of my fans and audiences.
